More recently, <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/bostonbar.org\/journal\/eyes-on-the-road-ai-privacy-and-automated-license-plate-readers\/\">these systems are using artificial intelligence<\/a> to create a vast, searchable database that can be integrated with other law enforcement data repositories.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"content-chunk\">\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=l8Y_XqcAAAAJ&amp;hl=pt-BR\">As a scholar of technology policy and data governance<\/a>, I see the expansion of automatic license plate readers as a source of deep concern. It\u2019s happening as government authorities are seeking ways to target <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.404media.co\/cbp-had-access-to-more-than-80-000-flock-ai-cameras-nationwide\/\">immigrant<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/legislative-attacks-on-lgbtq-rights-2025\">transgender communities<\/a>, are already using AI <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/03\/04\/nx-s1-5717031\/ice-dhs-immigrants-surveillance-confrontation-deportation-mobile-fortify\">to monitor protests<\/a>, and are considering <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/annals-of-inquiry\/the-pentagon-went-to-war-with-anthropic-whats-really-at-stake\">deploying AI systems for mass surveillance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eyes-on-the-road\">Eyes on the road<\/h2>\n<p>Using cameras to track license plates dates to the 1970s, when the U.K. was embroiled in a long-simmering conflict with the Irish Republican Army.<\/p>\n<p>The Met, London\u2019s police force, developed <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/scholarship.law.vanderbilt.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1581&amp;context=jetlaw\">a system that used closed-circuit television cameras<\/a> to monitor and record the license plates of vehicles entering and exiting major roads.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/91517715\/cameras-ai-us-cities-ai-sounding-alarms\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Few could have predicted that they would one day also double as nodes for surveillance.
