This time around, the \u201cHouston, we\u2019ve had a problem\u201d moment came with much lower stakes than Apollo 13\u2019s oxygen tank leak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"content-chunk\">\n<p>NASA\u2019s Artemis II is the first crewed mission featuring a proper toilet\u2014a major upgrade from the Apollo-era days of astronauts chasing <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2015\/5\/26\/8646675\/apollo-10-turd-poop\">runaway bodily emissions<\/a> in zero gravity.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, waste capture was handled by a crude system of plastic bags attached to space suits, a headache for astronauts already contending with the many life-threatening challenges of space travel. So far, the high-tech toilet has come with some problems of its own.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-toilet-troubles\">Toilet troubles<\/h2>\n<p>Within hours of launching, a blinking fault light signaled that the toilet was acting up. That problem caused the space loo to be closed for repairs during the mission\u2019s first six hours\u2014a short interval of time, but long enough to force at least one astronaut to <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.astronomy.com\/space-exploration\/artemis-2-crew-fixes-toilet-can-now-pee-in-it\/\">relieve himself<\/a> the old-fashioned way: into a bag connected to a funnel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"content-chunk\">\n<p>In a press conference last week, Artemis II flight director Judd Frieling explained that the toilet didn\u2019t have the right amount of water in its dispenser to keep the pump wet enough to work. \u201cOnce we figured out that we didn\u2019t put enough water in, we put more in there, [and] made sure . . . the pump was primed, and then the toilet came right back up.\u201d Self-described \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4nf0bsKaRBc\">space plumber<\/a>\u201d Christina Koch, one of the four astronauts, implemented the fix.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/artemis-ii\/\">Artemis II<\/a> crew, working closely with mission control in Houston, were able to restore the <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/orion-spacecraft\/\">Orion<\/a> spacecraft\u2019s toilet to normal operations following the proximity operations demonstration,\u201d NASA\u2019s Joseph Zakrzewski <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/blogs\/missions\/2026\/04\/02\/artemis-ii-flight-update-crew-and-ground-teams-successfully-troubleshoot-orions-toilet\/\">wrote<\/a> in a mission update on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The waste management system caused problems again on Saturday, when it wasn\u2019t able to successfully vent collected waste into space.
