When recruited for a full-time role, he was upfront about his wife\u2019s pregnancy and his need to take parental leave when their first-born child was due.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said, \u2018I\u2019m going to be flexible\u2014I don\u2019t have to take off right away and I can do it in stints.\u2019 I was offering these different plans because it was important to me for the company to be successful,\u201d Max says. \u201cThe recruiter said \u2018Don\u2019t even worry about it. Take your leave, and the company policy is 16 weeks.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Max accepted the job offer, this flexibility evaporated. A company representative told him, \u201cSorry for the misinformation you received, but this is our policy and we will not be making an exception.\u201d They\u2019ve held firm on this stance in the months that followed, leaving him with a combination of vacation and sick days to use once his child is born.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"content-chunk\">\n<p>Currently, the average annual <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ffyf.org\/2025\/11\/18\/new-high-cost-of-child-care-shapes-families-choices-and-futures\/\">cost<\/a> associated with daycare sat at $15,570 in 2025, and 1.3 million workers (89% being women) <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/kpmg.com\/us\/en\/media\/news\/kpmg-working-parents-survey-2025.html#:~:text=From%20juggling%20childcare%20and%20caring%20for%20aging,by%20inadequate%20childcare%20than%20the%20pre%2Dpandemic%20baseline.\">report <\/a>having to work part-time or miss work entirely due to childcare problems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet paternity policies\u2014and workplace taboos\u2014are leaving men without the flexibility to take leave when it\u2019s offered. Only 17% of Fortune 500 companies offer <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2020\/08\/31\/lack-paternity-leave-problem-moms-and-dads-study-finds\/5662562002\/\">equal leave<\/a> to mothers and fathers; even when they do, dads are often discouraged from taking it all.<\/p>\n<p>Both stigmas and stingier policies for fathers make it hard for some dads to step away. Getting approval is riddled with bureaucratic traps, managerial pressure, subverted gender roles, and unspoken consequences.
