Trader Joe\u2019s is settling a class action lawsuit for more than $7 million<\/a>, after a complaint claimed that the grocery giant printed 10 digits\u2014the first six and last four\u2014of customers\u2019 debit and credit cards on transaction receipts.<\/p>\n The 2019 class action lawsuit alleged that Trader Joe\u2019s violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) amendment to the Fair Credit Reporting Act. No customers reported identity theft as a result, Trader Joe\u2019s said on the settlement website; however, identity theft is not a requirement to prove a FACTA violation.<\/p>\n The Los Angeles County Superior Court did not rule on the case, and Trader Joe’s’ decision to settle did not confirm the validity of the claims.<\/p>\n In the settlement, Trader Joe\u2019s agreed to pay $7.4 million in fees to customers who received receipts exposing too many digits between March 5 and July 19, 2019.\u00a0Customers who made a purchase with a credit or debit card within that time frame may be entitled to a payment.\u00a0<\/p>\n Customers who submit a claim will receive a proportional payment distribution, estimated to be $102.45, according to the settlement notice.<\/p>\n
