Despite their romantic notions, the pair\u2014and their photographer\u2014battled a torrential downpour, and found themselves at the center of a perfectly timed lightning strike on El Capitan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are the moments that remind me why I do this, because you can\u2019t stage or recreate them,\u201d California photographer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ericahouckphoto\/\">Erica Houck<\/a>, who <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/ericahouck.com\/\">captured the shot<\/a>, told <em>Outside<\/em>. \u201cWhen they happen, they\u2019re just magic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Houck had spent eight months working with the couple, coordinating a photoshoot for their national park proposal. When it became clear that the weather wasn\u2019t looking good, Houck told <em>Outside <\/em>that she had offered to reschedule the shoot, but the couple was set on sticking to the schedule. Amid the chaos, neither she nor the couple realized that a lightning bolt had struck the face of Yosemite\u2019s most iconic peaks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had no idea I even captured that photo until I got home and was culling through the images,\u201d Houck said. \u201cThat one stopped me dead in my tracks; my mouth literally dropped. I was so thankful everything was composed well and in focus for such a once-in-a-lifetime moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although rare, Houck said instances like this serve as a reminder that in the wilderness, the unexpected lurks around every corner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do shoot in studio settings sometimes too, and there\u2019s definitely a place for that,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can create really beautiful, intentional images in a controlled environment. But for me, being out in nature, especially in those wild, unpredictable conditions, just hits differently.
