One of the weirdest brand collaborations of 2026 just dropped: The non-profit organization StoryCorps is teaming up with Prego\u2014yes, the pasta sauce brand\u2014on a device shaped like a pasta sauce lid that will record your family\u2019s dinner conversations. <\/p>\n
The device is part of a limited-time offering called the Connection Keeper Bundle, which launches on April 27 for $20. It includes some Prego sauce, a \u201cConnection Keeper\u201d recording device and instruction manual, and a pack of conversation prompt cards to spark discussion.<\/p>\n
StoryCorps, which is dedicated to recording the stories of Americans \u201cfrom all backgrounds and beliefs,\u201d is billing the Connection Keeper as a \u201csimple, screen-free conversation recorder\u201d designed for the average American family.<\/p>\n
“At StoryCorps, we believe listening is a profound way to honor and connect with our loved ones\u2014and that some of the most meaningful stories are shared in everyday moments, like around the table,” Sandra Clark, StoryCorps\u2019 CEO, said in a press release. “We’re proud to partner with Prego to help families be present with one another, and to preserve their stories for generations to come.”<\/p>\n
The Connection Keeper doesn\u2019t include screens, AI, WiFi, or Bluetooth\u2014just a single button to record and a USB-C cord to upload conversations to other devices. <\/p>\n
To operate the recorder, users simply place it in the center of the table, press record, and use one of StoryCorps\u2019 custom prompt cards to initiate conversation. Starting on May 4, users can import these recordings to a special StoryCorps x Prego site<\/a> in order to easily revisit them and share them with friends and family. <\/p>\n If users opt in, they can even make their recordings public as part of a special \u201cPrego Collection,\u201d which will ultimately be preserved at the Library of Congress, where StoryCorps keeps its full archives<\/a>.<\/p>\n The concept of your trusty pasta sauce brand listening in on your family discussing soccer practice or arguing about politics might seem dystopian at first glance\u2014especially given the recent stream of news about AI-powered wearables. But while the Connection Keeper may have a wacky origin story, it\u2019s not even close to the strangest\u2014or creepiest\u2014recording device that\u2019s grabbed headlines in recent months.<\/p>\n For example, unlike the AI-powered Friend pendant, this device doesn\u2019t have always-on capabilities. Nor does it have the ability to record footage, like Meta\u2019s AI glasses.\u00a0It\u2019s essentially just a retro voice recorder housed inside some kitschy hardware, and its $20 price point reflects that.<\/p>\n The Connection Keeper is certainly not a groundbreaking piece of tech. But in a moment when always-on AI wearables are quickly turning into potential privacy violation concern\u2014it’s actually a refreshing concept.<\/p>\n
