{"id":11413,"date":"2026-04-23T20:57:29","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T20:57:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wildgreenquest.com\/?p=11413"},"modified":"2026-04-23T20:57:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T20:57:29","slug":"meta-will-lay-off-10-of-workforce-company-told-staff-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wildgreenquest.com\/?p=11413","title":{"rendered":"Meta will lay off 10% of workforce, company told staff today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<p>Meta announced to employees on Thursday that the company is laying off around 10% of the company on May 20\u2014about 8,000 employees out of its workforce of more than 78,000 will be impacted, <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-04-23\/meta-tells-staff-it-will-cut-10-of-jobs-in-push-for-efficiency\"><em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a> first reported.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The company will also close 6,000 open roles it planned to fill, according to a memo that was sent to staffers today from Meta\u2019s chief people officer, Janella Gale.<\/p>\n<p>In the memo, obtained by <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/meta-plans-layoff-10-of-its-entire-staff-may-2026\"><em>Business Insider<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>Gale attributed the cuts to Meta\u2019s \u201ccontinued effort to run the company more efficiently and to allow us to offset the other investments we\u2019re making.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The memo did not specify what those \u201cother investments\u201d are, but it\u2019s public knowledge that the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has been going all in on AI.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the company announced it <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/meta-plans-spend-135-billion-162500394.html\">would spend up to $135 billion on AI initiatives<\/a>. Just this week, it was reported that Meta would track its employees\u2019 mouse movements and keystrokes to train AI models. Last week, the <em>Financial Times <\/em>reported that the company was developing an AI clone of CEO Mark Zuckerberg.<\/p>\n<p>Meta confirmed <em>Bloomberg<\/em>\u2019s reporting of the layoffs\u2014which attributed the cuts to boosting efficiency and offsetting the company\u2019s \u201cheavy spending on artificial intelligence\u201d\u2014but declined to comment further.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not an easy tradeoff and it will mean letting go of people who have made meaningful contributions to Meta during their time here,\u201d the memo said.<\/p>\n<p>Meta will offer \u201cgenerous severance package[s]\u201d for laid-off staff, which includes 16 weeks&#8217; base pay, in addition to two weeks for every year of employment, according to the memo. Additionally, impacted employees\u2019 COBRA health coverage will be covered for 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know this leaves everyone with nearly a month of ambiguity which is incredibly unsettling,\u201d the memo ended. \u201cWe will try to answer your questions here in the comments but as we&#8217;re still working through the details we aren&#8217;t able to share much more until later in May.\u201d<br \/>Meta, along with other tech giants Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft, will report its first-quarter earnings next year.
