Negotiations for the government lifeline had been underway for weeks as Spirit\u2019s cash reserves dwindled, but investors have reportedly balked at the prospect of the federal government becoming a majority owner of the company.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite reports saying that the company is prepping to cease operations, a company spokesperson declined to comment when asked by <em>Fast Company<\/em>, and said that \u201cSpirit is operating as usual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6iCG5HFEEbw\">President Trump said<\/a> that the government would bail out the airline. \u201cIf we could do it, we\u2019d do it, but only if it\u2019s a good deal,\u201d he stated, adding that \u201cwe gave them a final proposal.\u201d Trump didn\u2019t completely shut the door, however, saying that he\u2019d like to \u201csave the jobs\u201d and telling reporters that he would \u201chave something for you today or tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"content-chunk\">\n<p>Unsurprisingly, shares of Spirit Aviation Holdings took a nosedive, falling from $1.30 per share to $0.40 shortly after 11 a.m. ET. But as of around 1 p.m. ET, shares had gone back up to $1.30. Over the past five days, shares have been down almost 35%.<\/p>\n<p>Though a Spirit attorney <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/23\/spirit-airlines-bankruptcy-court-rescue.html\">told a bankruptcy court<\/a> during an April 23 hearing in New York that the company was going to run out of money, Spirit has not announced or formalized plans to liquidate or shut down. But it has been slowing down its operations. Last year, the carrier cut departures significantly compared with the previous year, and it <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/spirit-airlines-cuts-five-more-133016203.html\">discontinued service<\/a> to several destinations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The budget airline has been struggling for years and has declared bankruptcy twice since 2024. It appears that the recent spike in fuel prices is the straw that\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/01\/business\/spirit-airlines-shutting-down.html\">breaking the camel\u2019s back<\/a>.
