And it\u2019s why a quiet change to the settings for billions of Chrome users now threatens to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thatprivacyguy.com\/blog\/chrome-silent-nano-install\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.thatprivacyguy.com\/blog\/chrome-silent-nano-install\/\" aria-label=\"4GB AI download\">4GB AI download<\/a> was spotted by privacy advocate Alexander Hanff. The weights.bin file is used to power on-device Gemini Nano, but \u201cChrome did not ask. Chrome does not surface it. If the user deletes it, Chrome re-downloads it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"link-embed__info\"><span class=\"link-embed__provider\">Forbes<\/span><span class=\"link-embed__title\">\u2018Increasingly Urgent\u2019\u2014Microsoft Issues Password And 2FA Warning<\/span><small class=\"link-embed__byline\">By <span class=\"link-embed__author\">Zak Doffman<\/span><\/small><\/span><span class=\"link-embed__thumbnail-wrapper\"><span class=\"link-embed__thumbnail allow-inline-style\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/specials-images.forbesimg.com\/imageserve\/6804a45fdbeaca7fd6a93f2c\/960x0.jpg?cropX1=1359&amp;cropX2=3155&amp;cropY1=471&amp;cropY2=1399)\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hanff has now <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thatprivacyguy.com\/blog\/google-quietly-removes-on-device-ai-privacy-claim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.thatprivacyguy.com\/blog\/google-quietly-removes-on-device-ai-privacy-claim\/\" aria-label=\"flagged another issue\">flagged another issue<\/a> first disclosed on <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/old.reddit.com\/r\/chrome\/comments\/1t5qayz\/chrome_removes_claim_of_ondevice_al_not_sending\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/old.reddit.com\/r\/chrome\/comments\/1t5qayz\/chrome_removes_claim_of_ondevice_al_not_sending\/\" aria-label=\"Reddit\">Reddit<\/a>. Until now, Chrome\u2019s on-device AI toggle \u201clived inside the System block and carried the following description: \u2018Without sending your data to Google servers.\u2019\u201d That has now changed.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThe assurance is gone. The sentence promising that the model runs locally without sending user data to Google\u2019s servers has been deleted from the Settings UI.&#8221; Hanff warns the implications are dire.&#8221; I want to be blunt. There are only three plausible reasons for a billion-user vendor to remove a specific privacy claim from a product surface, and each of them is a serious problem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed-base image-embed embed-0\" role=\"presentation\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"bMqrj\">\n<p><span style=\"-webkit-line-clamp:2\" class=\"Ccg9Ib-7 _8XF2kHYM\">Google&#8217;s Chrome Update<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small class=\"pGGCM2aD\">Reddit<\/small><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWas the previous text inaccurate?&#8221; Hanff asks. \u201cHas the architecture changed? According to Google, Gemini Nano in Chrome processes all data on-device.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>In other words, nothing to see here.  Google also responded to Hanff\u2019s viral 4GB AI file report, a response that Hanff has dismissed as <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thatprivacyguy.com\/blog\/google-gaslights-despite-evidence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.thatprivacyguy.com\/blog\/google-gaslights-despite-evidence\/\" aria-label=\"gaslighting\">gaslighting<\/a>.
