But now, thanks to geopolitical tensions, one of Japan\u2019s biggest snack makers is deciding to dial back its vibrant packaging, at least temporarily.<\/p>\n<p>Tokyo-based snack company Calbee announced Tuesday a creative response to supply chain disruptions caused by the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz\u2014taking its brightly colored packaging and turning it monochrome.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">[Photo: Calbee]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.calbee.co.jp\/en\/news\/pdf\/174-29160.pdf\">a statement<\/a> issued by the company, Calbee will temporarily convert its colorful packaging to grayscale, for 14 product variants of their Potato Chips, Kappa Ebisen, and Frugra snacks. Buyers can expect to see the newly introduced temporary packaging starting the week of May 25.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalbee will continue to respond flexibly and promptly to changes in its operating environment, including geopolitical risks, and remains committed to maintaining a stable supply of safe, high\u2011quality products,\u201d the company said in its statement. \u201cWe ask for your understanding and continued support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The measure is a response to \u201csupply instability affecting certain raw materials amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East,\u201d the company said. \u201cThis measure is intended to help maintain a stable supply of products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/12\/world\/asia\/calbee-japan-bags-iran-war.html\">Reports<\/a> suggest the decision follows <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inboundlogistics.com\/articles\/the-invisible-shortage-how-petrochemical-shortages-could-impact-packaging\/\">disruptions to naphtha<\/a>, a crude oil derivative used for packaging and printer ink, of which Japan imports around <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/may\/12\/calbee-japan-snack-giant-black-white-packaging-iran-war-oil-ink-shortage\">40% of its needs<\/a> from the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Government officials have reassured the public about <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/asia\/potato-chip-bags-are-going-black-and-white-because-of-the-iran-war-3f91c07e\">the nation\u2019s supply<\/a>, including boosting domestic production and importing from other producers like the US, Peru, and Algeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdequate supplies of the naphtha ink ingredient have been secured for important functions in Japan. We are working with major corporations to ensure naphtha is imported by routes other than through the strait of Hormuz,\u201d Japanese government spokesperson Kei Sato told reporters on Tuesday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The potato chip maker is not the only company affected by the ongoing disruptions.
