NOAA doesn\u2019t know what to make of it yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o is &#8220;likely to emerge soon&#8221; with an 82% chance of it starting as early as this month into July, and with a 96% chance it will continue from December into February 2027, according to <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/\" id=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration&#8217;s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/enso_advisory\/ensodisc.shtml\" id=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/enso_advisory\/ensodisc.shtml\">report<\/a>, out Thursday, says while there is &#8220;still substantial\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/enso\/roni\/strengths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">uncertainty<\/a> about El Ni\u00f1o&#8217;s <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/enso\/roni\/strengths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">peak strength<\/a>&#8221; this hurricane season\u2014and it&#8217;s too early to tell\u2014the summer outlook does seem ripe for the possibility of creating &#8220;<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/&quot;https:\/\/cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/enso\/roni\/strengths\/\" id=\"&quot;https:\/\/cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/enso\/roni\/strengths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">very strong<\/a>&#8221; conditions later, as &#8220;the strongest El Ni\u00f1o events in the historical record are characterized by significant ocean-atmosphere coupling through the summer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition, <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/monitoring\/monthly-report\/global\/202604\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NOAA says<\/a> 2026 is already shaping up to be among the warmest on record, with last month ranking as the fourth-warmest April since global records began in 1850.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-el-nino\">What is El Ni\u00f1o?<\/h2>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o is a complex <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/ninonina.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weather pattern<\/a> that refers to the warming of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/faqs\/what-el-nino-and-what-are-its-effects\" id=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/faqs\/what-el-nino-and-what-are-its-effects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ocean surface, or above-average sea surface temperatures<\/a>, in the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Winds that normally blow west to east weaken, and in some cases blow east, disrupting normal weather and creating more extreme meteorological events, per the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). As the winds &#8220;<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/ninonina.html\" id=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/ninonina.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">take warm water from South America towards Asia<\/a>,&#8221; that&#8217;s replaced by cold water that rises up, or &#8220;upwelling,&#8221; according to NOAA.<\/p>\n<p>The i<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/blogs\/enso\/united-states-el-ni%C3%B1o-impacts-0\" id=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/blogs\/enso\/united-states-el-ni%C3%B1o-impacts-0\">mpact<\/a> can be global, and not only intensify storms and flooding, particularly in the U.S. Southeast and Gulf Coast, but also create <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/87204\/el-nino-brought-drought-and-fire-to-indonesia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wildfires and drought<\/a>. The <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/understanding-climate\/2015-state-climate-el-ni%C3%B1o-came-saw-and-conquered\" id=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/understanding-climate\/2015-state-climate-el-ni%C3%B1o-came-saw-and-conquered\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2015 Super El Ni\u00f1o<\/a> caused a significant Caribbean drought.<\/p>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o typically lasts nine to 12 months, and occurs an <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/ninonina.html\" id=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/ninonina.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">average of every two to seven years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The term El Ni\u00f1o, which means &#8220;little boy&#8221; in Spanish, was first coined by a South American fisherman who noticed unusually warm water in the Pacific Ocean in the 1600s, <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/ninonina.html\" id=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/ninonina.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a> NOAA.<\/p>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/91543232\/el-nino-forecast-is-alarming-updated-noaa-weather-report-hurricane-prediction\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>El Ni\u00f1o is &#8220;likely to emerge soon&#8221; with an 82% chance of it starting as early as this month into July, and with a 96% chance it will continue from December into February 2027, according to The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration&#8217;s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center.
