A few weeks ago, Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak managed to mention AI in his commencement speech to the Grand Valley State University class of 2026\u2014without receiving a wave of boos from the crowd.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou all have AI\u2014actual intelligence,\u201d Wozniak said, eliciting applause from the Michigan audience. \u201cMy entire life in the technical world, I\u2019ve been following people who were trying to figure out how to make a brain.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was at a company where the engineers figured out how to make a brain,\u201d he continued, saying it \u201ctakes nine months.\u201d<\/p>\n
For new college grads who are entering an unsteady job market with fewer openings for entry-level positions, Wozniak\u2019s words probably felt like the most reassuring message they\u2019ve heard all spring.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Compared with other tech moguls, Wozniak\u2019s views on artificial intelligence have been less complimentary.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t use AI much at all,\u201d Wozniak said during a March interview with CNN<\/a>. \u201cI often read things [AI produces], and they just sound too dry and too perfect. I want something from a human being, and I\u2019m disappointed a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n On the other hand, several commencement speakers have been booed for their comments promoting AI as revolutionary.<\/p>\n At the University of Central Florida on May 8, humanities department commencement speaker Gloria Caulfield, vice president of strategic alliances at Tavistock Development Co., was booed after touting AI as the \u201cnext industrial revolution.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
