With the new AI inbox first <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products-and-platforms\/products\/gmail\/gmail-is-entering-the-gemini-era\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/blog.google\/products-and-platforms\/products\/gmail\/gmail-is-entering-the-gemini-era\/\" aria-label=\"announced\">announced<\/a> in January, users can essentially put Gemini in charge to \u201cto help you better manage and stay on top of your inbox.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, 3 billion users rely on Gmail to connect and get things done,\u201d Google says. But email is a comms platform. Getting things done may involve sending emails, but until now the inbox hasn\u2019t actually been \u201cgetting things done\u201d itself.  <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"link-embed__info\"><span class=\"link-embed__provider\">Forbes<\/span><span class=\"link-embed__title\">\u2018Never Google\u2019\u2014Save These Phone Numbers Before You Travel<\/span><small class=\"link-embed__byline\">By <span class=\"link-embed__author\">Zak Doffman<\/span><\/small><\/span><span class=\"link-embed__thumbnail-wrapper\"><span class=\"link-embed__thumbnail allow-inline-style\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/specials-images.forbesimg.com\/imageserve\/6a0b74480a831caf36129d7a\/0x0.jpg)\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>That all now changes. \u201cToday, we\u2019re rolling out new capabilities that let you take action and get things done seamlessly,\u201d Google explains. <\/p>\n<p>An AI Inbox doesn\u2019t just receive emails, it \u201cpersonalizes draft replies.\u201d That means by the time you read an email, Gmail has already generated \u201ca contextual draft so you can review and respond in seconds.&#8221; Maybe even without reading it.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, why bother searching your own files when Gmail can do it for you. \u201cNo more digging through threads. When a task requires reviewing a Google Doc, Sheet or Slide, the relevant link is surfaced right next to your to-do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Google assures that \u201cthis analysis happens securely with the privacy protections you expect from Google, keeping your data under your control,\u201d but I\u2019m sure you can see the problem. Beyond the indirect <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/security\/google-workspaces-continuous-approach-to-mitigating-indirect-prompt-injections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/blog.google\/security\/google-workspaces-continuous-approach-to-mitigating-indirect-prompt-injections\/\" aria-label=\"prompt injection\">prompt injection<\/a> risks when AI reads emails and writes replies before you can, there\u2019s a privacy shaped hole.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"link-embed__info\"><span class=\"link-embed__provider\">Forbes<\/span><span class=\"link-embed__title\">\u2018Reboot Your PC\u2019\u2014Microsoft Changes \u2018Most Windows Devices\u2019 In June<\/span><small class=\"link-embed__byline\">By <span class=\"link-embed__author\">Zak Doffman<\/span><\/small><\/span><span class=\"link-embed__thumbnail-wrapper\"><span class=\"link-embed__thumbnail allow-inline-style\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/specials-images.forbesimg.com\/imageserve\/6a096ed40dd391e8f65b8b08\/960x0.jpg?cropX1=671&amp;cropX2=2355&amp;cropY1=416&amp;cropY2=1564)\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a security and privacy writer. That\u2019s where I go first with all these changes. I don\u2019t doubt the convenience and time savings. An inbox that manages itself sounds great. But these changes are being rolled out with little debate as to the pros and cons. Most are enabled by default. Users <em>can<\/em> opt out, but most <em>won\u2019t<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So, give it some thought. Use the new features by all means. But Google\u2019s Gemini is now encroaching into emails and calendars, photos and file storage.
