The RCS upgrade that has now come to both iPhone and Android will \u201cimprove privacy and security.\u201d So, why does <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2026\/05\/end-to-end-encrypted-rcs-messaging-begins-rolling-out-today-in-beta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2026\/05\/end-to-end-encrypted-rcs-messaging-begins-rolling-out-today-in-beta\/\" aria-label=\"Apple\">Apple<\/a> say iMessage and not RCS is still \u201cbest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GSMA <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/newsroom\/press-release\/ios-26-5-brings-e2ee-for-rcs-a-new-milestone-for-secure-cross%E2%80%91platform-messaging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/newsroom\/press-release\/ios-26-5-brings-e2ee-for-rcs-a-new-milestone-for-secure-cross%E2%80%91platform-messaging\/\" aria-label=\"says\">says<\/a> that for smartphone users, the RCS upgrade benefits are simple. \u201cE2EE RCS messages can\u2019t be read by anyone but the sender and receiver when they\u2019re being sent between Apple and Android devices, even by Apple or Google.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"link-embed__info\"><span class=\"link-embed__provider\">Forbes<\/span><span class=\"link-embed__title\">FBI Warns Microsoft Users\u2014New Attack Gains Access To Accounts<\/span><small class=\"link-embed__byline\">By <span class=\"link-embed__author\">Zak Doffman<\/span><\/small><\/span><span class=\"link-embed__thumbnail-wrapper\"><span class=\"link-embed__thumbnail allow-inline-style\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/specials-images.forbesimg.com\/imageserve\/67adef7408557748f4cae65b\/960x0.jpg?cropX1=325&amp;cropX2=1823&amp;cropY1=214&amp;cropY2=1125)\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This should provide users &#8220;with the highest\u202flevel of privacy and security while messaging.&#8221; But there\u2019s a catch. That only happens , GSMA acknowledges, \u201conce enabled by supporting mobile network operators.&#8221; Only then will all those users \u201crecognize the newly encrypted conversations via a padlock icon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GSMA is \u201cnow encouraging our members to leverage these new capabilities and enable more secure RCS messaging for personal and business users worldwide.\u201d But that won\u2019t happen quickly. It will be patchy. The Android-maker came much later to the E2EE party with Google Messages, a platform it (ironically) used to drive adoption of RCS across Android, having grown frustrated with a slow carrier rollout.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t yet know how fast this will actually happen, there\u2019s a very complex global cellular ecosystem that must upgrade for this to really be \u201cend-to-end.\u201d Until then, Apple is clearly right.
