Italian luxury sports car maker <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/RACE.MI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/RACE.MI\/\" aria-label=\"Ferrari\">Ferrari<\/a> , probably correctly, assumes that not many normal people have $650,000 available to buy its new Luce electric car, so success is likely despite the media\u2019s \u201cdivisive\u201d verdict.<\/p>\n<p>Investors didn\u2019t like the initial vibes generated by the Luce either, as Ferrari unveiled its first electric vehicle on Tuesday. The shares lost up to 8% on the first day. The shares steadied on Wednesday, gaining 0.28% at \u20ac284.85, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts thought the initial negativity was overdone, and that the Luce (\u201cLight\u201d in Italian) would probably go on to achieve traditional Ferrari profit margins. <\/p>\n<p>Negative reactions were not just from the media.   <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe risk destroying a legend, and I\u2019m truly sorry about that. (the Luce was) certainly a car that at least the Chinese won\u2019t copy,\u201d said former Ferrari chair Luca di Montezemolo, according to Automotive News Europe. \u201cI hope they at least remove the prancing horse from that car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ferrari\u2019s famous logo features a prancing horse.<\/p>\n<section id=\"anything-prancing-horse\">\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed\">Anything but a Prancing Horse<\/h2>\n<p>Italian Transport Minister Matteo Salvini said the Luce was \u201canything but a Prancing Horse car\u201d, according to <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breakingviews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.breakingviews.com\/\" aria-label=\"Reuters Breaking Views\">Reuters Breaking Views<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Others said the Luce looked more like a mass-market Nissan Leaf, not a target purchase for the super-rich.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed-base image-embed embed-2\" role=\"presentation\"\/>\n<p>Relatively unsuccessful competitors like Aston Martin and Volkswagen\u2019s Lamborghini must have felt some justification. Aston Martin has delayed its first EV until at least 2030. Lamborghini plans just a plug-in hybrid as its gesture towards electrification.<\/p>\n<p>Breaking Views summed up investor worries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFerrari\u2019s new Luce is a pivotal moment for the \u20ac50 billion ($58 billion capitalization) Italy-based group, and the luxury car sector in general. The big question is whether people who pay hundreds of thousands of euros for growling gas-guzzlers will also shell out for electric versions. If not, prices may fall, and secondhand values may depreciate, which will damage the brand,\u201d said Breaking Views columnist Neil Unmack.<\/p>\n<p>But Unmack said the Luce will probably be a success.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"diehard-ferrari-fans\">\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed\">Die-hard Ferrari fans<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cDie-hard Ferrari fans will want to own every model, even those they don\u2019t love, in order to qualify for (to buy) the ultra high-end supercars. It has become a big success.<\/p>\n<p>HSBC Global Investment Research said Ferrari investors will have to wait and see if the Luce is a success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFerrari takes a big swing with the Luce. Controversy was expected; now management needs to deliver on orders,\u201d HSBC Research said in a report. <\/p>\n<p>HSBC rates Ferrari as a \u201chold\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report said Ferrari realized the Luce would not necessarily appeal to existing owners, but it was surprised by the venom of the reaction. The Luce\u2019s costs were kept down by using many parts from other models, including the F80\u2019s front axle, the rear drive and suspension from the Purosangue.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed-base image-embed embed-3\" role=\"presentation\"\/>\n<p>Investment researcher Bernstein, which rates Ferrari \u201cOutperform\u201d, said it was not surprised by the initial fall in the Ferrari share price.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFerrari has not embarked on this blindly and we know that much curiosity has been generated by the Luce. The design has been developed by two of unarguably the most successful industrial designers of the last two decades (Apple Mac, iPod, IPhone, iWatch) and Ferrari has one of the strongest feedback loops with its buyers,\u201d Bernstein said in a report.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"luce-likely-establish-itself\">\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed\">Luce likely to establish itself<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cFerrari never reveals its targets or the actual sales of any of its range cars; we believe there are sufficient collectors and completeists, customers aspiring for collector status (and the access that provides to Ferrari\u2019s unicorns like its Supercars and Icona models) as well as new to Ferrari customers to ensure that Luce firmly establishes its position within Ferrari\u2019s range,\u201d according to Bernstein.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ferrari published the Luce\u2019s basic specifications, some of which are \u2013 <\/p>\n<p>Power \u2013 1,050 hp<\/p>\n<p>Torque \u2013 990 Newton metres<\/p>\n<p>Acceleration \u2013 0-60 mph 2.3 seconds<\/p>\n<p>Top speed \u2013 193 mph<\/p>\n<p>Range &#8211; 329 miles<\/p>\n<p>Battery \u2013 122 kWh<\/p>\n<p>Weight \u2013 4,982 pounds<\/p>\n<p>How will range react to relatively high-speed autoroute cruising? According to ChatGPT calculations, at a steady 80 mph, the Luce will shed about 32% of range, cutting it to 225 miles.
