She had led major restructurings, navigated three industry pivots, and built a reputation across strategy, operations, and culture. But when her firm restructured its leadership track, she was passed over for a role she was clearly qualified for. The reason her boss gave was: \u201c<em>We weren&#8217;t sure what area to put you in, where you would fit best.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sentence is a diagnosis. That model worked when roles were stable, and value was easier to define. But today&#8217;s reality looks different. According to the <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2024\/12\/things-learned-ai-skilling-workers-technology\/\">World Economic Forum<\/a>, 44% of core skills are expected to change within five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people are no longer one thing. The engineer becomes a storyteller. The operator becomes a strategist. The specialist becomes a leader navigating ambiguity, culture, and systems all at once. Our identities expand. Our narratives don&#8217;t. In a nonlinear world, identity must be composed; more mosaic than timeline. Yet most people are still explaining a multidimensional life through one-dimensional language. That&#8217;s where the real problem begins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We call the space between your actual capability and the story you use to communicate it the <em>Narrative Gap<\/em>. Most professionals are still describing themselves through outdated lenses:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Job titles that no longer capture their scope<\/li>\n<li>Functional labels that flatten their thinking<\/li>\n<li>Linear career summaries in a nonlinear world<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is subtle, but costly. Your work becomes harder to evaluate. Your differentiation gets diluted. Your impact becomes easier to overlook. And over time, you start to feel it, not as incompetence, but as friction. Yet most narratives don&#8217;t reflect that integration. The value you&#8217;ve built doesn&#8217;t compound. It fragments.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-narrative-worth-the-missing-multiplier\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Narrative Worth: The Missing Multiplier<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our work with leaders navigating complex transitions \u2014 stepping into larger roles, redefining their careers, scaling their impact \u2014 we&#8217;ve seen a consistent pattern. People aren&#8217;t lacking value. They&#8217;re struggling to make that value legible. A different lens helps here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of value as having three layers:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Self-worth: your internal sense of confidence and identity<\/li>\n<li>Career capital (a term coined by <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4nbVtcU\">Cal Newport<\/a>): the skills, experiences, and credibility you&#8217;ve built<\/li>\n<li>Narrative Worth: the story that connects and communicates both<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Narrative Worth is the structural integrity of your story. When it holds, your past compounds. When it doesn&#8217;t, even meaningful work gets lost in translation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people spend years developing the first two layers. Very few invest in the third. Without Narrative Worth, the other two don&#8217;t scale. Two people can have similar experiences but very different outcomes. One is understood. The other is explained. In a fast-moving world, explanation is friction. You can be highly capable and still be overlooked. You can have depth and still be misunderstood. You can create impact that never fully lands because, in a world of increasing complexity, value isn&#8217;t just created. It has to be translated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This gap has always existed, but the current environment is making it harder to ignore. AI is accelerating the production of outputs at a pace that compresses the value of isolated skills. Roles are expanding, industries are blurring, and leaders are being asked to integrate more dimensions of work than ever before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The paradox: as your capabilities become more multidimensional, your narrative must do more work to hold them together. If it doesn&#8217;t, you risk becoming harder, not easier, to understand. And in moments of uncertainty, people don&#8217;t reward complexity they can&#8217;t interpret. They default to what feels clear.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-from-fragmentation-to-integration-the-narrative-loop\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Fragmentation to Integration: The Narrative Loop<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the problem is fragmentation, the solution isn&#8217;t more effort. It&#8217;s coherence. Closing the Narrative Gap doesn&#8217;t require a rebrand. It requires integration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We call the practical sequence <em>The Narrative Loop<\/em>: four moves that turn experience into a signal the world can read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reclaim what you&#8217;ve outgrown.<\/strong> Identify the version of yourself you&#8217;re still referencing. Where are you describing yourself in ways that no longer reflect your scope? What identity are you holding onto because it once worked?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reconnect the threads.<\/strong> Look across your experience for patterns, not positions. What kinds of problems do you consistently solve? What perspectives have you developed that cut across roles or industries? This is where your multidimensional identity becomes visible \u2014 not as randomness, but as coherence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reframe the narrative.<\/strong> Translate your experience into a clear throughline. <em>&#8220;I have worked across strategy, operations, and culture&#8221;<\/em> becomes <em>&#8220;I help organizations navigate complexity by aligning strategy, execution, and human behavior.&#8221;<\/em> The difference isn&#8217;t cosmetic. It&#8217;s structural.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reinforce through expression.<\/strong> Narrative becomes real when it&#8217;s repeated. It shows up in how you introduce yourself, how you contribute in meetings, the opportunities you pursue, and the way you communicate your work. Consistency is what turns a story into a signal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, we focused on building capability. That still matters. But it&#8217;s no longer sufficient, because the question is no longer just about what you&#8217;ve built. It&#8217;s about what the world understands about what you&#8217;ve created, and whether they can see why it matters. For years, we focused on optimizing performance. Now we have to optimize for interpretation. Because in a world shaped by AI and accelerating complexity, value isn&#8217;t always recognized. It&#8217;s recognized when it&#8217;s clear. In a world where information is abundant, clarity becomes the differentiator. You don&#8217;t need to become more valuable. You need to close the gap between what you&#8217;ve built and what the world can actually see. Until your narrative catches up with your identity, your value won&#8217;t compound.
