But compared to previous versions, iOS 27 is relatively lacking in the number of new features that most people expect with the company’s annual operating system refresh.

That’s because this year, Apple is really focusing on stabilization, speed, and bug fixes with iOS 27. While that may disappoint some iPhone users, a focus on speed and reliability is something longtime Apple fans have been hoping for for a while now.

And it’s not like iOS 27 won’t have any new features. The operating system is getting its, arguably, most significant overhauls ever, with the launch of the new Siri AI artificial intelligence system.

Siri AI is designed to (hopefully) make Siri not only a useful digital assistant, but put it in the same league as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini. (As a matter of fact, the new Siri AI is powered by Gemini’s foundational models.)

iOS 27 also includes new child controls and several minor enhancements at the app level.

But though Apple showed off iOS 27 yesterday, not everyone can get it on their iPhone yet—though some can get it today. Here’s what you need to know.

iOS 27 developer beta: download it now

The good news is, if you really want to try out iOS 27 on your iPhone today, you can—provided you are a registered developer.

That’s because within moments of yesterday’s WWDC26 keynote ending, Apple released the first iOS 27 developer beta.

The developer beta, as its title suggests, is squarely aimed at the software coders who make apps for the iPhone. It allows them to start testing their apps on the new iOS and take advantage of the latest APIs Apple has released, which can help them add features to their apps.

But betas can also be notoriously buggy—particularly releases early in the beta cycle. That’s why Apple limits the first beta to registered developers only, instead of the general public.

Though rare, betas can corrupt your software or files—and even brick your device, making it non-functional. Developers are generally more aware of these risks and know what to look out for, which is why Apple issues them the beta first.

If you want to put the iOS 27 developer beta on your iPhone today, you can register for the Apple Developer Program to get immediate access to it. Registration is free.

iOS 27 public beta: download it in July

While Apple only released the iOS 27 developer beta yesterday, the company did announce that it will be releasing the iOS 27 public beta in July as well. This isn’t a surprise, as Apple has historically released the first public beta of a new iOS about four to six weeks after releasing the first developer beta.

As the “public beta” moniker suggests, this iOS 27 beta is designed for the general public to run on their iPhones—at least those who don’t want to wait until the final release later in the year.

The advantage that the public beta has over the developer beta is that it is generally more feature-complete and less buggy. One of the main points of betas is to find and report bugs, and that’s what developers will be doing with their developer betas.

Apple will then fix these bugs, making the iOS 27 beta more stable and safer for the general public to use.

Apple has not yet announced the exact date the first public beta will be available, but the most likely timeframe is likely the second or third week in July.

To get access to the public beta, you’ll need to sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program, which is free.

iOS 27 general release: download it in September

If you don’t want to run any of the iOS 27 betas on your iPhone (and I don’t blame you, given they can be buggy), then you’ll need to wait until the fall to get the general release of iOS 27 on your iPhone.

This is the release that has undergone months of testing to find and eliminate bugs and should include most of the features Apple previewed for iOS 27 yesterday.

To get this release of iOS 27, you don’t need to sign up for any program. You’ll simply be able to access it through the iPhone’s Software Update feature in the Settings app.

Apple hasn’t provided an exact date for when iOS 27 will be released to all supported iPhones, beyond saying it’s “coming this fall.” However, historically, Apple has released the new version of iOS in mid-September.

That means the most likely timeframe during which Apple will release the final version of iOS 27 will be sometime between September 14 and September 18 this year.

Source link

Yesterday, Apple unveiled the next major version of the operating system that will power the iPhone.
