But warmer weather also brings with it a less adorable companion: mosquitoes. Just like humans need bug spray before heading out into skeeter country, our furry friends can also benefit from using insect repellent.<\/p>\n<p>Itchy bites aside<strong>,<\/strong> these pesky insects also pose a threat to dogs by transmitting heartworm disease\u2014a potentially serious, even deadly, condition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMosquitoes are known for being a nuisance in the U.S., but they can also transmit deadly heartworm disease to our dogs,\u201d Stephanie Montgomery, veterinarian and CEO of the AKC Canine Health Foundation, told <em>Outside<\/em>. \u201cFortunately, there are a few simple precautions that can help keep your dog safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before you head out on your next summertime adventure with your furry friend, be sure to keep them safe by following these simple rules.<\/p>\n<h2>Use Appropriate Heartworm Prevention<\/h2>\n<p>Heartworm disease is a serious, potentially fatal condition in dogs transmitted through mosquito bites. After a dog ingests heartworm larvae, the parasite can grow up to a foot long and live in the heart, lungs, and surrounding blood vessels, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heartwormsociety.org\/heartworms-in-dogs\">American Heartworm Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While heartworm prevention products do not repel mosquitoes, Montgomery says these medications kill heartworm larvae transmitted by mosquitoes before they can cause disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsult your veterinarian about the best option for you and your dog,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2>Human Insect Repellents Can Be Dangerous for Dogs<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cNever apply human insect repellent products like DEET on your dogs; these products can be toxic if ingested, and it\u2019s no secret that most dogs like to lick their fur and paws,\u201d Montgomery said.<\/p>\n<p>There are a handful of dog-friendly bug sprays available, including <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chewy.com\/vets-best-natural-mosquito-repellent\/dp\/158465\">Wondercide Flea, Tick, and Mosquito Spray<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/nantucketspider.com\/products\/nantucket-spider-bug-repellent-for-dogs?srsltid=AfmBOoqNWoJ7XnF3zQOVTcMqzF_-Or0kiw29XHiTBusbZaiRacvMHEaw\">Nantucket Spider Bug Repellent for Dogs<\/a>. Both products use natural essential oils and are formulated without ingredients that can irritate dogs. Always ask your veterinarian about approved mosquito-repelling products.<\/p>\n<p>Mosquitoes hate citrus, and the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.animalhumanesociety.org\/resource\/pet-friendly-mosquito-repellents-humans-can-use-too\">Animal Humane Society<\/a> recommends rubbing citrus from tart fruits like lemons on your dog\u2019s coat. You can also plant mosquito-repelling herbs like basil, catnip, lemon balm, and rosemary in your yard to ward off insects.<\/p>\n<h2>When In Doubt, Dump It Out<\/h2>\n<p>Whether in buckets, pools, or ponds, stagnant water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can help yourself and your dog at home by checking for stagnant water, where mosquitoes breed,\u201d Montgomery said. \u201cCheck and empty places like bird baths, flowerpots, clogged gutters, outdoor furniture covers, and other areas where water can collect.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Bites Happen\u2014Don\u2019t Freak Out<\/h2>\n<p>If your dog gets bitten, Montgomery says not to panic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost mosquito bites cause only mild irritation.
