Someone broke into the cabin and shattered its windows, kicked in a door, and tossed valuable material off of a cliff, leaving the restoration crew to pick up the pieces.<\/p>\n<p>The 1.6-mile trail to the High Rock Lookout encompasses\u00a0roughly 1,300 feet of gain, and is one of Washington\u2019s most popular day hikes and offers views of Mount Rainier. In response to the destruction, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), which manages the lookout, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/r06\/giffordpinchot\/newsroom\/releases\/high-rock-trail-266-lookout-area-and-trailhead-closure-0\">issued<\/a> an emergency closure through the end of August. Vandalism on national forest land is a federal crime, and USFS law enforcement say they are investigating the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really been heartbreaking for me,\u201d restoration coordinator <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"http:\/\/google.com\/search?q=Don+Allen%2C+the+Sand+Mountain+Society%27s+board+president&amp;rlz=1C5GCCM_en&amp;oq=Don+Allen%2C+the+Sand+Mountain+Society%27s+board+president&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOdIBBzIwN2owajeoAgCwAgA&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\">Don Allen<\/a> told <em>Outside<\/em>. He\u2019s led the High Rock Lookout efforts since 2015, spending his weekends at the summit.<\/p>\n<p>High Rock Lookout is perched on a 5,685-foot pinnacle in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, making its restoration particularly precarious. And it\u2019s not just that, but historic fabric from the original structure.\u201d Allen is board president at the Sand Mountain Society, a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to preserving historic fire lookouts and natural resources in the Pacific Northwest.<\/p>\n<p>Driving from Portland and hiking up to the lookout takes Allen more than four hours each way. Sixty-seven of the lookout\u2019s 180 window panes were shattered, according to Oregon outlet <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewstribune.com\/outdoors\/article316169466.html\"><em>The News Tribune<\/em><\/a>. The front door was smashed in so badly it wouldn\u2019t close. Tools, an extension ladder, a cement mixer, and the restored original tongue-and-groove ceiling boards were thrown off the nearby\u00a0600-foot cliff, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kuow.org\/stories\/washington-s-historic-high-rock-lookout-ransacked-by-vandals\">KUOW<\/a> reported. Volunteers later found the historic boards too damaged to use.<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cIt Made Me Cry\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Two hikers <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DZeEQxiMmDr\/\">discovered<\/a> the wreckage on June 11 and posted a video to the restoration project\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=61575169731135\">Facebook page<\/a>, where it spread across the hiking communities. Sara Osburn, a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sandmountain.org\/\">Sand Mountain Society volunteer<\/a> learned the news in a group text. She drove up at dawn for what was supposed to be a sunrise birthday hike with friends. It became a cleanup instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was pretty awful, but it was far worse to see it in person,\u201d Osburn told <em>Outside<\/em> over the phone. Wreckage was strewn along the cliffside facing Mount Rainier, and the ground was covered in glass. \u201cThey just ripped everything apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Osburn said she spent hours sweeping up the biggest shards. \u201cIt was bad,\u201d she said. \u201cIt made me cry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"fp-remove\" style=\"border:none;overflow-y:hidden;background-color:white;min-width:320px;max-width:420px;width:100%;height:420px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gaiagps.com\/public\/ISN5xLQWooINQ3aPqrvUjifp\/?embed=True\" seamless=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Thousands of Volunteer Hours<\/h2>\n<p>Completed in 1931, the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sandmountain.org\/projects\/high-rock-lookout\/\">High Rock Lookout<\/a> is a Great Depression-era structure. More than <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/09\/28\/us\/fire-lookout-tower-washington.html\">8,000 fire lookouts<\/a> once speckled high points across the country. But \u201calmost every year we lose another historic lookout,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sandmountain.org\/about\/\">Rick McClure<\/a>, Sand Mountain Society board member and retired USFS archaeologist, told <em>Outside<\/em>. \u201cThis is part of American history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By 2017, rot had left the building beyond repair.\u00a0High Rock has proved to be the most complicated restoration project he\u2019s ever worked on, said McClure. Everything reaches the summit on someone\u2019s back or by helicopter, and \u201cthere is no flat ground, so crews built platforms just to sleep and set up their tools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, volunteers replaced the summit foundation and hauled the restored structure back up, reassembling it with a fresh roof and windows made\u00a0of hand-reglazed glass. That season they had 146 volunteers who logged some 6,700 hours, said McClure. All that remained for 2026 were finishing touches until the vandalism occurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been heartwarming to see the outpouring of love and care by people in the community,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tracy-croshaw-7a851912\/\">Tracy Croshaw<\/a>, board president of the White Pass Country Historical Society, told <em>Outside<\/em>. The organization will manage the lookout\u2019s volunteer stewards once the restoration is complete.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers have been prepping the windows for reglazing and carrying tools, water, and more up the trail. On July 8, a helicopter brought construction supplies for the crew, said McClure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are just coming out of the woodwork to support us,\u201d added Osburn, describing strangers messaging her asking how to volunteer. \u201cThe gratitude is overwhelming on my part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Repairing the vandalism will cost at least $9,300, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yakimaherald.com\/news\/northwest\/popular-wa-hiking-trail-and-lookout-closed-until-august-for-repairs\/article_50fb7b2b-ae13-54e4-aa09-fb341311f56d.html\"><em>The News Tribune<\/em><\/a> reported.
