In fact, it\u2019s probably one of the more indulgent pieces of camping gear you can buy. But after sleeping on one for 16 nights while rafting the Grand Canyon, I\u2019m convinced it\u2019s one of the few luxury items that are actually worth the money.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d never camped with a cot before. I always figured a good inflatable sleeping pad was as comfortable as camping got. But as a side sleeper, I usually wake up when one hip has had enough. I roll over, the other hip starts hurting, and I spend the rest of the night playing rotisserie chicken.<\/p>\n<p>The Cot One Convertible is the first camping sleep setup I\u2019ve used that solved my achy problem.<\/p>\n<p>As one REI reviewer, my guy David, so eloquently wrote, \u201cA lot of people cannot justify the price of this cot. For my Grand Canyon trip, I paired it with an <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-afl-p=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/backcountry.tnu8.net\/c\/2850304\/358742\/5311?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.backcountry.com%2Fnrs-snooze-pad-lite\">NRS Snooze Pad<\/a> (similar to a Paco Pad). On regular camping trips, I\u2019d throw my regular <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-afl-p=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/rei.pxf.io\/c\/2850304\/1448521\/17195?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Fproduct%2FC04270%2Fsea-to-summit-ting-sleeping-padcamp-plus-self-infla\">inflatable sleeping pad<\/a> on top of the cot instead.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of relying on air for loft, the cot stretches a fabric sleeping surface tightly across an aluminum frame. It has enough give to cushion pressure points without sagging like a hammock. My hips stayed supported, my back stayed comfortable, and I slept through the night without constantly changing positions.<\/p>\n<p>One tip: <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/helinox.com\/products\/copy-of-cot-one-convertible-l?variant=46121555722414\">Watch Helinox\u2019s setup video<\/a> before assembling it for the first time, and then practice once or twice at home. Assembly isn\u2019t difficult, but the legs have to face the correct direction for the frame to be properly tensioned. Once you understand that, the setup takes just a couple of minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Getting six and a half inches off the ground also proved more useful than I expected. You\u2019re not sleeping directly on cold sand, rocks, or roots, and you\u2019re a little farther away from the scorpions and other curious critters that wander through camp at night. While sleeping under the stars is one of the best parts of any river trip, this cot is also low enough to fit inside a tent without sacrificing much headroom.<\/p>\n<p>For the record, I\u2019m six feet tall and tested <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-afl-p=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.avantlink.com\/click.php?tt=cl&amp;mi=17825&amp;pw=209007&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fhelinox.com%2Fproducts%2Fcopy-of-cot-one-convertible-l&amp;website_id=209007\">the Long version.<\/a> I\u2019d recommend spending the extra money for the added length if you\u2019re my height or taller. It kept my whole body on the cot instead of leaving my heels hanging off the end.<\/p>\n<p>At a little over five pounds, I wouldn\u2019t choose it for most backpacking trips. But for river trips, car camping, trailhead overnights, and pretty much every other kind of camping, it\u2019s earned a permanent place in my gear closet.<\/p>\n<p>Could you sleep on an inflatable pad on the ground instead? Absolutely.<\/p>\n<p>I probably will again someday.
