The cause and manner of his death is still pending, the coroner told <em>Outside.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvidence suggests that he may have fallen from a steep, high-altitude ridgeline that separates Grand Teton National Park and the Jedediah Smith Wilderness,\u201d TCSAR wrote in a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=1516946130470796&amp;set=a.235380358627386&amp;type=3&amp;ref=embed_post\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Standish was found near an area known as the Wigwams in the Teton Range near Teton, Wyoming. The Wigwams are a series of rugged, highly technical rocky peaks and backcountry routes along the western boundary of Grand Teton National Park and the Jedediah Smith Wilderness. The Wigwam Traverse is a steep, exposed, off-trail ridgeline that some backpackers use as an alternate route along the CDT. Elevations in the area exceed 10,800 feet, making the terrain both physically demanding and technically challenging.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"fp-remove\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FTetonCountySAR%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02kt5T89GViFsU9Y8VqWm1Tp9wLPtFbUi2xTSf2cQUz5dzj5RjHHNZKhxnVkSH56Xgl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"606\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!-- --><\/p>\n<section id=\"\" class=\"content-card rounded-xl px-base-loose pt-base-loose pb-loose shadow-sm shadow-black\/10\">\n<h2>A Timeline of the Incident<\/h2>\n<p><strong>July 19:<\/strong> Standish gave an update from a location near Old Faithful, and described his planned route in the Tetons, Gros Ventre Wilderness, the Wind River Range, and Divide Basin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>July 23:<\/strong> Standish\u2019s family received a Garmin check-in without coordinates or a message, as well as a video via Facebook Messenger that they believe placed him in the Tetons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>July 27:<\/strong> The family contacted park officials after they received no further communication.<\/p>\n<p><strong>July 29:<\/strong> TCSAR spotted and recovered the Standish\u2019s body.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><\/section>\n<p>On July 19, Standish sent his family an update near Old Faithful in Yellowstone, describing his planned southbound route through the Tetons, Gros Ventre Wilderness, the Wind River Range, and Divide Basin.<\/p>\n<p>On July 23, Standish sent his family a Garmin check-in, a pre-written status message sent from a Garmin inReach satellite device. This check-in had neither coordinates nor a message. The family said they also received a Facebook Messenger message they believe looked like the Tetons. When they didn\u2019t hear from him, they contacted park officials on July 27.<\/p>\n<p>Park officials determined that the Garmin tracking points on July 23 placed Standish near the Wigwams in, and transferred the case to TCSAR, which has jurisdiction over SAR operations outside the national parks, Grand Teton National Park told <em>Outside.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the morning of July 29, TCSAR assembled a helicopter short-haul team and flew to the hiker\u2019s last presumed point.
