Then they found out it was for a 2.2-gigawatt AI data center.<\/p>\n<p>That was the deal breaker, according to the<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/ai\/ai-data-center-rural-america-backlash-c0af4e16\"> Wall Street Journal<\/a>. Bare said she believes AI could be \u201cthe destruction of the human race\u201d and sees staying on her land as a biblical duty. Huddleston was put off by the NDA clause of the contract and simply didn\u2019t want to leave the routine of her daily life. \u201cEven if I had $26 million, I\u2019d want to sit here in my chair, and have my coffee and eat my food where I always do,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Bare, 54, is legally nearly blind from diabetes. Huddleston is 83 and walks with a cane. \u201cOne of us is blind and the other\u2019s cripple,\u201d Huddleston said. They call themselves \u201ccountry hicks\u201d and have become polarizing figures in the pushback against AI\u2019s expansion into small towns.<\/p>\n<p>Their refusal to take the deal has split their hometown of Maysville, population 8,700. Neighbors have sued neighbors. Facebook groups have turned hostile.
