The slide killed her and nine other climbers, including Nepali-British climber Nirmal \u201cNims\u201d Purja.<\/p>\n<p>Alpine Club of Pakistan President Major General Irfan Arshad Khan told the Pakistani newspaper <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2024322\"><em>Dawn<\/em><\/a> that volunteer porters are now moving her body to a nearby base camp with plans to eventually airlift it by helicopter to Skardu, the closest major city.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pakistan-body-american-climber-found-broad-peak-762a54cb9a192d5332dd955734054f41\"><em>The Associated Press<\/em><\/a>, Geis was the last avalanche victim to be located. Pakistani authorities initially <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodmorningamerica.com\/news\/story\/american-netflix-star-10-climbers-missing-after-reported-135252482\">reported<\/a> they recovered Geis on July 31, shortly after the avalanche. <em>Outside<\/em> later learned that rescuers had recovered only her detached leg\u2014the rest of her body remained missing for weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The body of one other missing climber, Nawang Thendu Sherpa, remains on the mountain. Officials found him on July 31, but left his body in place due to extreme terrain hazards and safety risks, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/everestchronicle.com\/body-of-us-climber-sarah-mallory-geis-recovered-broad-peak\"><em>Everest Chronicle<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"width:100%;border:none;display:block\" title=\"Script Content\" async=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Broad Peak avalanche struck four different climbing teams around 9 A.M. local time above Broad Peak\u2019s Camp II, at an elevation of 21,160 feet. It marked the deadliest high-altitude mountaineering accident since 2015, when an earthquake-triggered avalanche swept through Mount Everest Base Camp and killed 22 people.<\/p>\n<p>Broad Peak sits in Pakistan\u2019s Karakoram range and is the 12th-highest mountain in the world. The mountain is \u201camong the more frequently climbed 8,000-meter peaks, but it is still significantly less popular than Everest and Manaslu,\u201d Lukas Furtenbach, founder of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.furtenbachadventures.com\/en\/\">Furtenbach Adventures<\/a>, told <em>Outside<\/em>. Furtenbach leads expeditions to many of the world\u2019s highest peaks, and says that between 50 and 100 climbers will attempt Broad Peak every year, putting it in the \u201cupper middle, in terms of annual climber numbers.\u201d Expeditions usually take between six and eight weeks, though he says much of that time is for acclimatization and waiting for suitable weather windows.<\/p>\n<p>Geis was a resident of San Antonio, Texas, and had recently closed a Pilates studio to focus on mountaineering, <em>CNN<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/01\/us\/pakistan-climbers-avalanche-sarah-mallory-geis-killed-hnk\">reported<\/a>. Broad Peak was her first attempt at summiting one of the world\u2019s 14 8,000-meter peaks.
