He walks into every show with a game plan and a mental Rolodex of material ready to deploy the second an opening appears. \u201cI always have a plan\u2026 I always have a reason to bring something up,\u201d he says. \u201cYou\u2019re never gonna see me, like, kinda floundering and then going, \u2018All right, so what\u2019s your story over here?&#8217;\u201d Instead, he\u2019s always \u201ctrying to find trigger words to go into my own, own material, own stories.\u201d That prep work is exactly what lets him stay calm when a stranger says something he never saw coming.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-don-t-let-success-distract-you\">2. <strong>Don\u2019t Let Success Distract You<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While his career was actually taking off, Arcuri didn\u2019t want anything to prematurely distract him from his goals. He moved from a decent apartment to \u201cliving in a basement with rats with five other guys\u201d because he says, \u201cYou have to just be okay with struggling financially.\u201d Comforts like \u201cin-unit AC or in-unit laundry\u201d would only \u201ccripple you in the long run,\u201d he warns, because maintaining that lifestyle becomes its own priority. As he puts it, \u201cI\u2019d rather live in a basement filled with rats doing stand-up than living in a high-rise being an accountant. Take One Risk Per Show<\/h2>\n<p>In every set, Jeff includes one new, unproven joke tucked between two he knows will land \u2014 what he calls \u201ca shit sandwich.\u201d He explains: \u201cYou got two nice pieces of bread, you got two jokes that always work, but in between it you got a real brand new one,\u201d he explains. \u201cThat, that could become the bread eventually.\u201d Or it could bomb. And he\u2019s blunt about how risky you can be with unproven material: \u201cYou get one per show\u2026 \u2019cause then two, they\u2019re gonna start wondering why they paid so much money.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-don-t-blame-the-audience\">4. <strong>Don\u2019t Blame the Audience<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A brutal cruise-ship gig taught Arcuri to look inward before pointing fingers. After following a comedian who brought the house down, he watched half the crowd walk out mid-set. \u201cI am a comic who has blamed the audience in the past, but I also blame myself,\u201d he admits. Although there are definitely going to be bad audiences to face, \u201cI\u2019m never going to 100% blame them. I always try to think, hey, you still gotta learn from stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-adapt-or-get-left-behind\">5. <strong>Adapt or Get Left Behind<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Arcuri built his massive following by posting his crowd-work clips instead of hoarding his material out of fear it would get \u201cused up\u201d for his live shows. His advice for creators who guard their content too closely: \u201cWell, then you need to write more to compensate for that. You have to find another niche.\u201d As he puts it, \u201cThere is no, \u2018Hey, if I get into this club, they\u2019re gonna get me a network deal\u2019 anymore. It\u2019s all up to you to get into people\u2019s brains.\u201d He tells hesitant friends bluntly: \u201cYou\u2019re throw shit at a wall, man.
