Throw Yourself Into the Deep End<\/h2>\n<p>Des\u2019s very first stand-up set wasn\u2019t a five-minute open mic \u2014 it was a 20-minute opening slot in Cork City, because the club \u201cwas so cheap, they decided to not book an opener.\u201d His only experience was doing some bits at a joke competition two weeks earlier. \u201cI mean, I\u2019m sure there was a decent four or five minutes in there. A lot of it was rubbish. But I didn\u2019t die, you know?\u201d he says. \u201cMy only memory from that was I couldn\u2019t wait to do it again.\u201d <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-force-yourself-out-of-your-comfort-zone\">2. Force Yourself Out of Your Comfort Zone<\/h2>\n<p>After becoming famous in Ireland and building a following performing in Mandarin in China, Des made a deliberate choice in 2018 to rebuild his career from zero in the U.S. \u201cI set myself a goal. I said, \u2018I\u2019m not gonna live off any money that I make outside of the United States,&#8217;\u201d he says. He played \u201ctiny crowds in cities\u201d where \u201cpeople had no idea who I was\u201d \u2014 on purpose. \u201cIt was a great exercise, but it was not easy. Redefine What \u201cRisk\u201d Actually Means<\/h2>\n<p>Des doesn\u2019t count a bombed joke as a real risk \u2014 that\u2019s just \u201cthe occupational hazard of needing new material.\u201d The real risk, he says, is choosing what to talk about in the first place: \u201cAm I ready to take the heat for having strong opinions on a particular topic?\u201d That\u2019s the risk-taking that actually matters to him, more than \u201c\u2018Oh, this joke might not land.&#8217;\u201d <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-stop-resisting-the-new-platform\">4. Stop Resisting the New Platform<\/h2>\n<p>Des admits he \u201crailed against the dying of the light\u201d when social media took over comedy, worried about \u201cburning\u201d his best bits by posting them. For years, it went nowhere: \u201cI\u2019m posting loads of shit. It\u2019s not going anywhere, and it\u2019s really time-consuming.\u201d Then one clip about mindfulness broke through \u2014 \u201cit got 14 million views on my account,\u201d he says, with reposts pushing it toward \u201c100 million views\u201d total. \u201cNothing I\u2019ve done has come even close to that.\u201d <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-turn-being-an-outsider-into-your-edge\">5. <strong>Turn Being an Outsider Into Your Edge<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Des built his early Irish fame on being \u201cthis guy that came to Ireland and saw Ireland through my unique eyes\u201d \u2014 a built-in outsider\u2019s perspective he later repeated in China. \u201cPart of it is that I\u2019ve been good at being a fish out of water,\u201d he says, \u201cbut that\u2019s a blessing and a curse\u201d since it can also cap how wide an audience follows you.
