Authorities have not released the man\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Sheriff Tad Dykstra with the Park County Sheriff\u2019s Office told <em>Outside<\/em> that the man was familiar with hiking, but he was ill-prepared for such a strenuous ascent. At roughly 12,800 feet, Granite Peak is widely considered one of the most dangerous and technical high points in the lower 48, and experts routinely compare the route\u2019s exposure and difficulty to the climb up Wyoming\u2019s Grand Teton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGranite Peak is all of the above: It\u2019s high alpine, all above tree line, large boulders, steep, rocky terrain,\u201d Dykstra said. \u201cAnd then there are the weather issues, whether that means high winds or passing storms. It\u2019s a mountain that you need to have experience in order to climb. It\u2019s just super dangerous, and people die.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>An Experienced Hiker Who Lacked Mountaineering Skills<\/h2>\n<p>According to Dykstra, the man was an experienced hiker but lacked the high-alpine mountaineering skills required to summit Granite Peak. He met another person at the trailhead, and the two decided to hike together from Mystic Lake Trailhead, some 22 miles below the summit. The other hiker summited the mountain alone. When he didn\u2019t see the 21-year-old on his descent, he called in a missing person\u2019s report.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities began searching on August 25 and recovered the man\u2019s body on Thursday, August 27, responding agencies wrote in a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/19ABDZjDrD\/\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Granite Peak sits in a geographic triangle bordering Park, Stillwater, and Carbon counties. Authorities do not suspect foul play, but do say the tragedy is a reminder to stay within your limits. Just because a peak isn\u2019t Mount Everest, Dykstra says, doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s not deadly. Smaller, unknown mountains can be equally as dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGranite Peak is in an in-between zone where people think it\u2019s accessible enough\u00a0that they can just go out there and do it, but it\u2019s far enough away that it\u2019s an event to actually get it done,\u201d Dykstra said.<\/p>\n<p>Prospective hikers should gather as much information as they can, talk to experienced people, and make sure their skills and ability match what they\u2019re setting out to do, he adds. Hike with others, bring the right equipment, and \u201cdress like a skittle\u201d so that you\u2019re easy to find.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, knowing when to turn around should always be in the back of every peakbagger\u2019s mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think anybody should feel bad about looking at something and saying, \u2018This is out of my capabilities.
