While REI obviously can\u2019t match Bote\u2019s inventory, it\u2019s worth <\/i>checking out REI\u2019s Bote sale here<\/i><\/a>.<\/i><\/p>\n <\/section>\n Unless you\u2019re a barefoot, bare-assed trail runner, there are barriers to entry for virtually any outdoor activity. (And there may be legal barriers to that first example. Outside<\/i> is not liable for readers who skinnydip singletrack.) Standup paddleboarding is no different. But assuming you live close enough to a body of water, how does one afford\u2014and collect\u2014the ingredients for a successful maiden voyage? Enter Bote.<\/p>\n A titan of inflation (good inflation, as in, inflatables), Bote is a Florida-based outfitter that offers paddleboard bundles that make getting into standup paddleboarding easier\u2014and cheaper. I just took one of those packages\u2014the Wulf Aero Inflatable paddleboard<\/a>\u2014out for a sunset spin in Lake Tahoe, and I\u2019ve got it packed in the back of a van for a three-week road trip through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho in a few days.<\/p>\n But I wanted to report back with first impressions for two reasons. First off, Bote\u2019s in the midst of a huge Labor Day sale<\/a> that runs through September 8th, and I don\u2019t want you to miss it. That includes the beginner-friendly Wulf<\/a>, which is on sale for $449 ($130 off), as well the Breeze Aero<\/a> (Bote\u2019s next step-up paddleboard, $159 off), inflatable kayaks, hybrid paddleboards, and more. But more so than that, I just had a damn good evening on the water, and figured a timely dispatch was in order.<\/p>\n <\/section>\n The Wulf Aero<\/a> makes a decent splash upon arrival. It\u2019s available in a 10\u20194\u201d version and an 11\u20194\u201d version, and the 10\u20194\u201d we tested comes in a beefy backpack that weighs 29 pounds. Hefty. However, the backpack itself is sturdy, and the broad, cushioned straps make sandy slogs less of a chore. That weight accounts for a great deal of included booty, too. In addition to the board itself, you\u2019ve got a three-piece paddle, a coiled leash, a fin, a repair kit, and a hand pump.<\/p>\n Now, the hand pump will get the job done. But you can also deploy Mini Rechargeable 12V Pump<\/a> for hands-off inflation. It takes about ten minutes, and it\u2019s as easy as clicking a few buttons and choosing the right nozzle. Having handpumped other SUPs in the past, I was stoked to relax and let the rechargeable pump handle the heavy lifting. Meanwhile, the included paddle assembled in seconds, and I spent a few minutes just enjoying the sunset while the pump purred and puttered like a robot cat. Once the screen on the pump alerted me that the Wulf had reached the target 15 PSI, I quickly snapped the fin into place and hit the water.<\/p>\n A moment of transparency, if you will. I am a lifelong snowboarder, and I\u2019ve directed Outside\u2019s snowboard test for a decade. I\u2019ve been skateboarding since elementary school, though I\u2019ve never really gotten past being elementary at it, and I\u2019m also a dogshit\u2014 albeit enthusiastic and unfortunately landlocked\u2014surfer.<\/p>\n The point I want to make here is that while I do live and breathe board sports, I am not an experienced paddleboarder. I won\u2019t be able to dissect the dimensions of the Wulf or analyze its aerodynamics like a SUP savant. But honestly? That\u2019s not who the Wulf is for\u2014it\u2019s for people like me who want to get out on the water, easily, and have some fun. And in that regard? This thing is awesome.<\/p>\n The first aspect I noticed was the material of the Wulf. According to Bote, it\u2019s crafted from a military-grade PVC, and while I never like to jinx an inflatable piece of gear, having popped more than my fair share of sleeping pads, it seems well-made and durable.<\/p>\n After shoving off, I was struck by the stability of the 34-inch-wide platform. Even when I hit some classic evening chop coming in from the southwest, the board felt stable under my feet. The fin helped the Wulf track against the current, and I was able to weave between buoyed boats and lollipop around a little outcropping of rocks and shrubs.<\/p>\n One of my favorite features was the BVA foam deckpad. It\u2019s textured and grippy when wet, and it felt supple, plush, and secure underfoot even as I was paddling as hard as I could. I didn\u2019t get a chance to really test endurance on this first outing, as the sun was going down, but I imagine the Wulf will be comfortable for longer, multi-hour missions in the future.<\/p>\n Speaking of longer missions, one of the attributes that sets Bote apart from other inflatable outfitters is its \u201cMagnePod\u201d technology. Funny marketing jargon aside, each paddleboard features a magnetic puck on the central deck of the board. And there are tons of compatible accessories<\/a> you can nab with magnets integrated into their base, among them speakers, drinkware, packs, and coolers. Bote sent along a MagneBottle<\/a>\u2014now on sale for half off\u2014and I loved it. Even when a wakesurf boat rolled on by and sent foot-and-a-half-high rollers through my path, the bottle stayed secure. And unlike the items that you strap down in the bungee cords on the nose of the board, you can easily reach down and grab the MagneBottle while paddling. Again, for bigger adventures, this was a feature that stoked me out. I\u2019ve definitely been paddleboarding with a Nalgene strapped to the bungees and never taken so much as a sip. Thanks to the handy hydration, it feels like there\u2019s a ton of room to take the Wulf further, and I look forward to doing so!<\/p>\n With that, I\u2019ll end this quick-and-dirty dispatch. I\u2019d heartily recommend this setup to anyone looking to get into paddleboarding for the first time. The Bote Wulf is also perfect for a casual paddler like myself, one who\u2019s ready to invest in their first board. And while the Bote\u2019s inflatable packages have everything you need to hit the water, I would definitely toss that electric pump in your cart, too.
