Here is how Outside\u2019s editor tackled the 1.6-mile trail on a tight schedule.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<p>Published September 5, 2026 05:20AM<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hawaii is known for its sweeping white sand beaches and turquoise-hued water, but many of the island state\u2019s inland adventures hold just as much tropical wonder.<\/p>\n<p>Hiking Diamond Head Trail on Oahu is one such excursion. Located just three miles from Waikiki and about 20 minutes from Honolulu\u2019s airport, the 1.6-mile out-and-back trail is perfect for a day hike or, in my case, a quick stretch of the legs while on a layover. I even managed to squeeze it in just hours before <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/dod.hawaii.gov\/hiema\/hurricane-lala-updates\/\">Hurricane Lala<\/a> hit Oahu in mid-August.<\/p>\n<p>Also known as L\u0113\u02bbahi, the trail meanders through <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/gostateparks.hawaii.gov\/diamondhead\">Diamond Head Crater<\/a>, a 300,000-year-old tuff cone formed during a single, massive volcanic eruption.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond being a popular hiking spot, the trail is also rich in history. In 1908, the U.S. military built bunkers and stairs as part of its coastal defense system.
