It took a dozen responders five hours to save the rider with a technical rope rescue, the responding agency Grand County Search and Rescue (GCSAR), wrote in a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1EtMhbnqmH\/\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear what caused the driver to go off road, and authorities have not released the person\u2019s name or condition. But the late hour made the rescue a tricky ordeal, rescuers said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe call came in at 11:30 P.M., and night ops bring their own challenges\u2014headlamps and spotlights can actually create tunnel vision for rescuers, narrowing the field of view, making situational awareness more challenging,\u201d Scott Sutcliffe with GCSAR told <em>Outside<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The accident occurred just outside of Hot Sulphur Springs, which is located 96 miles west of Denver. The area features off-road vehicle access and surrounding natural mineral pools.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"fp-remove\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FGCSAR%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0c75dERmGd41Er8pxgNHGnDbLV6eyPZ4JdkEfULngTiREAKMhx6XaGGGSbu8NHW3cl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"804\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a steep, exposed slope with loose rock and very few natural anchor points for our rope systems; our technical teams ended up anchoring off a vehicle to build a safe system,\u201d Sutcliffe said. \u201cThat combination of exposure, loose rock, and limited anchoring points is what made it a technically challenging rescue rather than a straightforward extraction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To counter nighttime difficulties, Sutcliffe said officials\u00a0used several drones to provide overhead lighting, which gave the team a much wider, more even view of the slope than handheld lights alone could. GCSAR also posted spotters to watch for rockfall and sliding debris.<\/p>\n<p>Rescuers used multiple rope systems to lower rescue members, equipment, and medical supplies down to the victim. They then used additional rope systems to raise the injured rider, team members, and other responders up the trail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCombined with the overhead drone lighting, that let us keep eyes on the slope conditions throughout the operation and protect both our medical personnel and the patient,\u201d Sutcliffe said. \u201cEveryone on our rope system wore helmets, and we also sent a helmet down to the patient for their protection during the extraction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once crews stabilized the patient, they transported the person to Grand County EMS for further medical care and handed off to Med Evac.
