Ayers has lived in Nepal for more than 20 years and oversees\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><strong>Outside<em>\u2018s coverage of Mount Everest.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>There\u2019s been another deadly avalanche on a Himalayan peak in Nepal, and the most recent disaster has killed multiple workers within the country\u2019s mountaineering industry.<\/p>\n<p>On September 26, an avalanche hit the Base Camp at 23,379-foot Himlung Himal near Nepal\u2019s Annapurna region. The slide enveloped sleeping tents and communal areas, burying them under multiple feet of snow.<\/p>\n<p>Searchers dug through more than 14 feet of deposited snow to try and find survivors. They located the bodies of four mountain workers, but 12 more people are still missing as of this story\u2019s publishing date.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteer rescue workers organized by the Nepal National Mountain Guides Association (NNMGA) confirmed on September 29 that they were calling off the search for the remaining 12.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"width:100%;border:none;display:block\" title=\"Script Content\" async=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith only eight people on scene, our manpower wasn\u2019t enough to continue the search,\u201d Tul Singh Gurung, NNMGA\u2019s president\u00a0told <em>Outside<\/em>. \u201cThe snow was 14 or 15 feet deep, which made the search extremely difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gurung cited dangerous conditions at the foot of the peak for ending the search.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinding four bodies confirmed that we wouldn\u2019t find any survivors,\u201d he added. \u201cSo we decided to postpone the search until later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A death toll of 16 people would make the avalanche one of the deadliest Himalayan climbing disasters in recent years. In 2022, a slab avalanche on Draupadi Ka Danda II in India\u2019s Himalayas killed 29 people, and in 2014, an ice avalanche left 16 Nepali workers dead on Mount Everest.<\/p>\n<p>The search on Himlung Himal was led by veteran guide Mingma G, whose company, Imagine Nepal, had two employees go missing in the avalanche. The other 14 were working for outfitter Himalayan Holidays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had rushed up in the hope of finding survivors, but we had no luck,\u201d Mingma G <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mingma.g\/?hl=en\">wrote on Instagram<\/a> on September 28. \u201cThe avalanche was enormous\u2014no one had believed that Himlung Base Camp could experience something of that scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Where Is Himlung Himal?<\/h2>\n<p>Within Nepal\u2019s mountaineering industry, Himlung Himal is one of the country\u2019s more popular 7,000-meter peaks. Guiding companies organize expeditions to the peak in October and November, and aspiring climbers often use the peak <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/climbingthesevensummits.com\/himlung-himal-climb\/advice-from-mike-hamill\/\">as a stepping stone<\/a> ascent prior to Mount Everest or another mountain above 8,000 meters (26,000 feet).<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"fp-remove\" style=\"border:none;overflow-y:hidden;background-color:white;min-width:320px;max-width:420px;width:100%;height:420px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gaiagps.com\/public\/Bz9FkuRUdlIsjmczT1ALdNY6\/?embed=True\" seamless=\"\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Guiding companies describe the climb as a \u201cmoderate to difficult\u201d ascent that takes in glacier travel, steep slopes of snow, and climbing with fixed ropes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isolated tranquil peak is a perfect blend of beauty, adventure, and learning experience for aspiring mountaineers,\u201d writes Nepali guiding firm <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/8kexpeditions.com\/package\/himlung-expedition-7126m?srsltid=AU7gw4ULzkSCwk6lIIim0WJnGpzoBs55ncNdGMiCWO-KRrUXUZsIFB2z\">8K Expeditions on its website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClimbers will need climbing boots and crampons from Camp II and above,\u201d guiding firm <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/imagine-nepal.com\/package\/himlung-expedition\">Imagine Nepal writes on its website<\/a>. \u201cClimbing from Camp II to the summit is suitable for anyone who wishes to experience the 7000-meter altitude range and is suitable for climbers of all grades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Base Camp sits at 16,000 feet on the peak\u2019s eastern side.<\/p>\n<h2>A Cyclone Blankets the Himalayas in Deadly Snowfall<\/h2>\n<p>The avalanche struck after a tropical cyclone brought heavy rain and snowfall across Nepal for three consecutive days. Climbers who waited out the storm at the Base Camp on 26,795-foot Dhaulagiri, about 50 miles west of Himlung, told <em>Outside<\/em> that the storm dropped nearly seven feet of snow, with much more falling higher on the mountain.<\/p>\n<p>In anticipation of the storm, expedition operators called off the record-setting climbing season on 26,781-foot Manaslu, evacuating over 490 paying clients and hundreds of mountain workers from the mountain before the snowfall began.<\/p>\n<p>Gurung told <em>Outside<\/em> several mountain workers tried to leave the Himlung Base Camp during the storm, before the avalanche occurred. But they were unable to evacuate due to the heavy snow, and turned back.<\/p>\n<h2>The Latest Deadly Avalanche of 2026<\/h2>\n<p>This is the latest event in a uniquely dangerous three months for the mountaineering community. Ten climbers, including celebrity guide Nirmal \u201cNims\u201d Purja, died in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan in late July.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in August, catastrophic flash flooding along Nepal\u2019s Bhote Khosi and Trishuli Rivers killed 1,400 people and left 6,000 more missing. Many of the people impacted by the flood are workers in the country\u2019s tourism industry. In mid-September, four people died on Manaslu\u2014two were killed by an avalanche.<\/p>\n<p>Gurung told\u00a0<em>Outside<\/em> he is worried that the various disasters will have a negative impact on Nepal\u2019s struggling tourism industry. To prevent future incidents, he advises tourists to hire veteran guides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMountaineering is inherently high risk at every step. The most important thing climbers can do is to hire experienced, qualified manpower, even if it costs more,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is very important.
