He\u2019s the legendary actor behind Ash in the <em>Evil Dead<\/em> films, the star of <em>Burn Notice<\/em> and <em>Bubba Ho-Tep<\/em>, and the author of three <em>New York Times<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/stores\/author\/B08ZQR2D1D\/allbooks\">bestsellers.<\/a> Now, with his wife Ida Gearon, he has written, directed, produced and self-funded <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ernieandemma.com\/\">Ernie &amp; Emma<\/a><\/em>, a sweet, funny, chainsaw-free film about a widowed salesman. But he\u2019s known as \u201cthe chainsaw guy\u201d to Hollywood, so nobody was writing him the parts he wanted. So instead of waiting to be cast, he wrote the role himself. \u201cMy fingers ain\u2019t broken,\u201d he told me. \u201cWriting is the cheapest part of the arts.\u201d Bruce expanded on that, adding,\u00a0 \u201cFreedom is everything, man. Give me liberty or give me death.\u201d\u00a0 <br \/><strong>Takeaway:<\/strong> If nobody is offering you the opportunity you want, build it yourself.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stop-bragging-about-18-hour-days\"><strong>Stop Bragging About 18-Hour Days<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Bruce kept shooting days to about ten hours and promised never to waste anyone\u2019s time. He has no patience for burnout as a badge of honor. \u201cThe young filmmaker loves to brag about the 18-hour shooting days. I\u2019m like, \u2018That means you don\u2019t know what you\u2019re doing.\u2019\u201d As the funder of the flick, he was also very aware that wasted time means wasted money. \u201cMy checkbook yelled at me every day.\u201d<br \/><strong>Takeaway:<\/strong> Respect your team\u2019s time, and they\u2019ll give you their best work in return.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/info.entrepreneur.com\/hsh?__hstc=229039816.b16cd6a00fb40a8f2353e01d34203bc1.1779896349804.1793201834658.1793214333424.237&amp;__hssc=229039816.3.1793214333424&amp;__hsfp=c84e69eb981c60afda4c04f2272cc04d\">Subscribe to the free\u00a0How Success Happens\u00a0Newsletter<\/a>\u00a0for weekly inspiration.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-beware-of-the-spores\"><strong>Beware of \u201cThe Spores\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Bruce started writing a test-screening questionnaire, then realized he was copying the studio habits he\u2019d left behind: endless notes, focus groups and reshoots. \u201cI call it the spores. The spores get into your head, the spores confuse you.\u201d He still hires experts and wants every good idea, but in the end he stays \u201cthe judge, the jury and the executioner\u201d of his own vision.<br \/><strong>Takeaway:<\/strong> Hire people who understand your vision, and keep the final call for yourself.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pick-up-the-phone\"><strong>Pick Up the Phone<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Bruce didn\u2019t wait for a distributor. He messaged Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League, a friend from years of <em>Evil Dead<\/em> marathons, and offered to show up in every city if they booked the film. Bruce\u2019s strategy is to prove the film in small markets first, then approach \u201cthe big dogs later.\u201d His cinematographer got the same kind of result by asking Sony for cameras and came back with free gear and a box of lenses.\u00a0 <br \/><strong>Takeaway:<\/strong> Your existing relationships are your best launch pad, so ask boldly.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-your-only-problem-is-motivation\"><strong>Your Only Problem Is Motivation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For about $5,000, anyone can buy a camera, lights, mics and editing software and make a movie in their own hometown, Bruce notes. \u201cDon\u2019t tell me your problems, filmmakers. Your problems are solved. Here\u2019s your only problem: motivation.\u201d You still have to put in the 10,000 hours, but the gatekeepers are gone. His closing pep talk: \u201cCome on, you lazy bastards, get going.\u201d<br \/><strong>Takeaway:<\/strong> Stop waiting for perfect conditions and start your project with the tools you already have.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce also explains why Hallmark movies need \u201csome teeth,\u201d tells me about the fan who cried five times during <em>Ernie &amp; Emma<\/em>, and rates a job as an Elvis impersonator.
