It’s a comforting morning routine, but it is mostly a discipline, a way to ensure I don’t let busy days keep me from working on my glutes to counteract hours of sitting.

A month ago, however, I added decadence to my discipline, making me look forward to the coffee-grinding routine (almost) as much as I do the coffee. That decadence comes in the form of a comfy pair of slides and a hot foot massage, bundled together as the Nike x Hyperice Air Zoom Hyperslide.

Is this $250 recovery slide an expensive gimmick? Well . . . yes. But an oh-so-comfortable one that I’m now reluctant to give up.

(Photo: 101 Degrees West)

Nike x Hyperice: Nike Air Zoom Hyperslide

Sizing: M4-18, W5-19 full sizes

What to Know About the Nike Hyperice Air Zoom Hyperslide

The slide itself is a slab of supportive foam topped by responsive, low-profile Air Zoom units (the same pressurized-air and trampoline-like tensile-fiber pods used in Nike’s high-end running shoes, here tuned more for comfort than performance). The Air Zoom cushioning feels both plush and lightly bouncy underfoot, and the wide platform provides reassuring stability, making my feet feel coddled and supported while doing my squats, walking around my office, or sitting at my desk.

But that coddling is just the beginning. Hidden beneath the Velcro top straps are a pair of Hyperice pods that magnetically attach to the main instep straps and transmit heat and vibration to the tops of my feet. Buttons on each side of the pods cycle through three levels of vibration (50, 75, and 100 Hz) and three levels of heat (109°F, 113°F, and 117°F). You can also use the Bluetooth-connected phone app, but as far as I can tell, its main benefit is only letting you set the run time longer than the default fifteen minutes.

(Photo: 101 Degrees West)

What the Nike Air Zoom Hyperslide Feels Like

The first time I used the Hyperslides, I dutifully wore socks and selected the lowest settings, as recommended. Quickly, however, I was cranking them up to high on both heat and vibration. I have, however, kept wearing the socks, because they seem to help wrap my foot and transmit the sensations farther around it rather than having them isolated in one spot on top.

It didn’t take long before I craved the buzzing warmth radiating through my feet each morning, although the sensation felt simply pleasurable, not therapeutic. That was before the day I woke up with a sharp pain between two metatarsal heads that I traced back to a twisting foot plant on a trail run the day before. When I slid my foot into the slide and started the massage, it initially felt a bit intense on the sore spot, but as the heat and vibrations loosened the stiffness, the pain all but disappeared and stayed away all day.

What Would Make It Better

The Hyperslides do what they do better than I ever imagined (having never imagined a heated, vibrating slide), but after using them for a while, I have a couple of nitpicky wishes.

The batteries are supposed to last for an hour on full power, which was pretty close to what I get. Because I almost always restart them after the first fifteen minutes, I run out of juice after two days. They usually sputter out of power before the full 30 minutes on the second day, which I prefer to having them complete the cycle because the dying pods prompt me to plug them in. There’s no battery-level indicator, so if they turn off without dying, I don’t know if I need to charge them unless I remember how many days it’s been since they were charged and how many cycles I’ve run since (I don’t have the mindspace for that). The worst is when I turn them on thinking they are charged, and the battery runs out in a few short minutes—then I have to wait three hours for them to charge. I wish they had some way to let me know how much juice was left.

My only other wish is that I’d like the heat and vibration to reach down to my arch better. But that would require a bigger, more encompassing device, like a boot. Oh! Nike and Hyperice made one of those too. I may have to try them someday, but for now I’ll luxuriate in the easy, slip-on, push-button pleasure that the Hyperslides add to my mornings.

Source link

This comfy combo of recovery slide and foot massager adds decadence to my morning routine.
