Earlier this month, photos depicting Zendaya and Tom Holland\u2019s wedding just about broke the internet. Images of the celebrity power couple standing at the altar, popping champagne, and posing with a Spider-Man mask quickly racked up more than 10 million likes on Instagram. The only catch? They weren\u2019t real.<\/p>\n

The collection of AI-generated images, first shared in a since-deleted Instagram post from AI creator Juan Regueira Rodr\u00edguez<\/a>, went so viral that they reached Zendaya herself, as the Emmy-winning actress revealed in a new interview.<\/p>\n

On the latest episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/em><\/a>, Zendaya discussed her upcoming film The Drama<\/em>, which centers on her character\u2019s wedding. That led host Jimmy Kimmel to bring up the online speculation that Zendaya and her long-term partner, Holland, have privately gotten married, including the glut of AI-generated images of her potential wedding, like those from Rodriguez\u2019s viral post.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany people have been fooled by them,\u201d Zendaya said of the images. \u201cI was just out and about in real life, and people were like, \u2018Oh my god, your wedding photos are gorgeous.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Babe, they\u2019re AI. They\u2019re not real.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

When Kimmel asked if anyone in Zendaya\u2019s personal life was also fooled \u201cand mad that they weren\u2019t invited,\u201d she said, \u201cYes, many people.\u201d<\/p>\n

The believability of the images, even to those who know Zendaya and Holland personally, speaks to the growing difficulty of distinguishing real and AI-generated content online.<\/p>\n

A recent study<\/a> found that humans are only successful at identifying AI-generated media 51.2% of the time, and when it comes to AI-generated images specifically, that stat is even lower, at just 49.4%.<\/p>\n

That means posts like Rodr\u00edguez\u2019s are merely a coin toss away from being taken as fact by viewers on social media.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, users across the internet are decrying the images as a violation of Zendaya\u2019s privacy. \u201cThe secondhand embarrassment I feel knowing Zendaya has seen those ai-generated wedding photos\u2026\u201d one user wrote.<\/p>\n

Amid all the speculation, Zendaya still hasn\u2019t confirmed or denied if she\u2019s married to Holland\u2014although her main stylist, Law Roach, did say, \u201cThe wedding has already happened. You missed it,\u201d on the red carpet at the Actor Awards<\/a> earlier this month. Of course, Zendaya\u2019s relationship status is no one\u2019s business but her own\u2014and if she ever does<\/em> share photos from her wedding, odds are they won\u2019t include a Spider-Man mask.<\/p>\n
