Maybe he should&#8217;t"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"content-chunk\">\n<p>On March 19, the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts voted to <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfa.gov\/system\/files\/meeting-materials\/8-CFA-19MAR26-7-Mint-2026-Semiq-24K%20Trump%20coin-pres.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approve a <\/a>commemorative gold coin that flies in the face of the law. On one side of the coin President Donald Trump is seen scowling as he leans with his fist on a desk; on the other, a bald eagle carries the Liberty Bell.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"content-chunk\">\n<p>Designed for the United States\u2019 semiquincentennial, the coin would break a longstanding U.S. tradition established via an <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/31\/5114\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1866 law<\/a> that bans living presidents from appearing on currency. Only one other living president in history has appeared on a coin: 100 years ago when then-President Calvin Coolidge\u2019s profile was depicted alongside George Washington\u2019s for the <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usmint.gov\/learn\/coins-and-medals\/commemorative-coins\/sesquicentennial-of-american-independence-half?srsltid=AfmBOopkTatEFklTH4kMzKUdpZbWC0UlwRyYM4sfRF3-75EiW-YFr73g#imagegallerypdp-9bca7f7f68-item-9523927b5a-tabpanel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1926 Sesquicentennial Half Dollar<\/a> to mark the 150th anniversary of the U.S. founding.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-the-trump-coin-got-approved\">How the Trump coin got approved<\/h2>\n<p>Last year, Trump fired the Commission of Fine Arts board and replaced it with his own nominees who could rubber stamp his design agenda. This is the commission who approved the coin\u2019s design.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">[Images: US Mint]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The president and administration has taken unprecedented action to stamp his name and likeness across the federal government in a way that mirrors <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/2026\/02\/20\/trump-banner-justice-department-authoritarian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">propaganda campaigns of foreign authoritarian regimes<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"content-chunk\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"1024\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/images.fastcompany.com\/image\/upload\/f_webp,q_auto,c_fit,w_1024\/wp-cms-2\/2026\/03\/i-1-91513777-trump-coin.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-91513998\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.fastcompany.com\/image\/upload\/f_webp,q_auto,c_fit,w_150\/wp-cms-2\/2026\/03\/i-1-91513777-trump-coin.jpg 150w, https:\/\/images.fastcompany.com\/image\/upload\/f_webp,q_auto,c_fit,w_300\/wp-cms-2\/2026\/03\/i-1-91513777-trump-coin.jpg 300w, https:\/\/images.fastcompany.com\/image\/upload\/f_webp,q_auto,c_fit,w_1024\/wp-cms-2\/2026\/03\/i-1-91513777-trump-coin.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, (max-width: 1023px) calc(100vw - 160px), 600px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">[Image: US Mint]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Mint has provided a workaround to get Trump\u2019s likeness on a coin by saying the Treasury secretary is authorized to mint and issue new 24-karat gold coins. They also might be trying to <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/article\/2025\/oct\/07\/trump-coin-mint-commemorative-dollar-legal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exploit a technicality<\/a> in the law allowing new commemorative coins to be minted for the 250th anniversary of the U.S. founding this year that specifically prohibits the portrait of a living person on the reverse side, or tails, of any coin. Trump\u2019s on obverse, or the heads side.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no word on the size or production run of the Treasury\u2019s commemorative Trump coin, but architect James McCrery II, who is a fine arts commission member and former ballroom designer, said \u201cI think the president likes big things\u201d and a Mint official said the run would be \u201cvery limited,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-gold-coin-250th-anniversary-8be387e70ae561c62e27552bf47fb430\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-coolidge-effect\">The Coolidge effect<\/h2>\n<p>But Trump\u2019s desire to stamp his likeness on a coin might not have the ending he\u2019s hoping for. Like the Trump coin, the Coolidge coin was commemorative and not for general circulation. Its design was also selected by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. The coin was produced to defray costs for the Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia, and though design reportedly inspired some criticism, <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1926\/06\/30\/archives\/put-coolidge-and-washington-portraits-on-the-new-sesquicentennial.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>the New York Times<\/em> reported at the time<\/a>, it was ultimately met with indifference because no one really wanted it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/91513777\/president-trump-wants-his-face-on-a-coin-maybe-he-shouldt\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On March 19, the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts voted to approve a commemorative gold coin that flies in the face of the law.
