{"id":9267,"date":"2026-03-23T20:38:34","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T20:38:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wildgreenquest.com\/?p=9267"},"modified":"2026-03-23T20:38:34","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T20:38:34","slug":"josh-rosen-host-of-dirt-talks-life-behind-the-scenes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wildgreenquest.com\/?p=9267","title":{"rendered":"Josh Rosen, Host of DIRT, Talks Life Behind the Scenes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<p>Published March 23, 2026 12:18PM<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>I thought I knew what to expect when I sat down with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rosen43\/\">Josh Rosen<\/a>, host of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/huckberry.com\/dirt?srsltid=AfmBOop53PMAl32r77IsjWIogd-oJLl_rmaKQcXXTWxtw9FfGSrxEAvu\"><em>Dirt,<\/em><\/a>\u00a0a Huckberry\u00a0travel and adventure series that follows the former pro snowboarder around the world exploring food cultures, connecting with local farmers and chefs, and of course, getting a little wild.<\/p>\n<p>But I was surprised to hear how transformative the show has been for him. Not only has it changed the way Rosen imagines a collective future; it has changed the way he imagines his own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to be engaged with people, telling stories,\u201d Rosen told <em>Outside.<\/em> \u201c<em>Dirt<\/em> has made that clear.\u201d Rosen and his team have spent nearly 200 days on the road immersing themselves in 16 vibrant cultures. \u201cIt\u2019s brought me joy,\u201d he says. \u201c<em>[Dirt]<\/em> has helped me shed ego. And understanding people and their experiences has brightened my horizons in a way I never expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo this will be the heart of your work forever?\u201d I asked him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah. I\u2019ve found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Who Was Josh Rosen Before <em>Dirt?<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"width:100%;border:none;display:block\" title=\"Script Content\" async=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve followed Rosen\u2019s career (or if you\u2019ve seen the show) you know he\u2019s a bit of an adventure junkie. He grew up skiing, then built a career as a professional snowboarder in his late teens through early 20s. Snowboarding is still one of his greatest passions. \u201cAnd I push myself harder each year,\u201d Rosen told <em>Outside<\/em> from a helicopter in Alaska headed for a run.<\/p>\n<p>Rosen\u2019s career had shifted to apparel before becoming the host of <em>Dirt<\/em> (fashion being another one of his passions). When he and the show\u2019s director\/producer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/huckberry.com\/journal\/posts\/a-bigger-world-what-motherhood-and-dirt-taught-me-about-wonder?srsltid=AfmBOopJiSiXTjLnUtZw4JStuCtF306coJRZky6F9TyE-8uk5BLa-3Mf\">Kate West<\/a> connected for the first time, he was living in New York City growing <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saturdaysnyc.com\">Saturdays Surf NYC<\/a>, a clothing brand that mixes coastal surf vibes with New York City edge. West was the director of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/stoked.org\">Stoked\u00a0<u>Mentoring<\/u><\/a> at the time, a nonprofit that helps underserved youth discover action sports. West rented out space in the back of Rosen\u2019s brick and mortar for an event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just had this connective energy,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Rosen decided to take a couple of years off from apparel to see if he could find a way to make a living doing what he loves: discovering, traveling, and engaging with people. He moved to Seattle, unaware that West decided to do the same by relocating to Jackson Hole, Wyoming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSerendipitously, Kate West reached out from Huckberry and said she was working on a project,\u201d Rosen says. The two started dreaming up the show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI come from snowboarding and she comes from independent film. And so, when we came together, there was this idea that I bring the adventure and she brings the ability to dig into a place and understand it on deeper levels.\u201d The two accessed both of those energies and harnessed them to make the show. The pitch stuck and things took off in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Josh] is a real unicorn in a lot of ways,\u201d West says. \u201cMy mantra on set is \u2018fun is fun.\u2019 Josh is fun. People love being around him.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Rosen\u2019s Favorite Off-Camera Moments<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2734509\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">Josh Rosen, while filming <em>Dirt<\/em>, Newfoundland<\/span> (Photo: Wade Dunstan)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201c<em>Dirt<\/em>\u00a0is a <em>true<\/em> reality show,\u201d Rosen says.\u00a0\u201cWe don\u2019t script anything. The show is a complete expression of our journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the best travel moments happen spontaneously. \u201cWhen we travel to these places we are just non-stop traveling, meeting people,\u201d Rosen says. \u201cOftentimes you\u2019ll meet someone who will say, \u2018Hey, you should go see my uncle\u2019s farm on the way out of here. He\u2019s right on the way and he\u2019s got these special pigs. You\u2019ve got to see these pigs.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While in New Zealand, a M\u0101ori guide who was helping the crew explore local hot springs for the show offered to take them cliff-jumping. \u201cHe\u2019s really interesting. He was in a punk rock band back in the day and he sort of still keeps that energy,\u201d Rosen says. The man\u2019s home was on a small, nearby lake, surrounded by cliffs to jump from.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI perked up,\u201d Rosen says. \u201cAnd it was one of those beautiful, natural transitions to this guy\u2019s home that we couldn\u2019t show. He brings those ingredients back to the featured chef for a \u201cfinal meal,\u201d a true reflection of farm-to-table eating. The story behind every meal reveals a connection to the source, its seasonal benefits, and how the food supports local communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[In America,] you spend $200 on a bag of groceries because it all says organic,\u201d Rosen says. \u201cBut then you go to places where they\u2019re consuming food where people were careful and thoughtful about every piece from the beginning to your plate, and you recognize the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we found out early on, is that it\u2019s not \u2018you are what you eat;\u2019 it\u2019s you are what the thing you\u2019re eating ate,\u201d Rosen says. \u201cIf the animals are grazing on wild pastures, they\u2019re eating the most nutrient dense things, like clovers and all these really beautiful grasses, then of course that milk is going to be really special.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Rosen\u2019s Favorite Episode and Favorite Dish<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2734514\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Josh Rosen and a local chef next to the water in Newfoundland \" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1350\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2734514 size-full\" style=\"color:transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/norris-point.png?width=3840&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover 1x\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/norris-point.png?width=3840&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">Josh Rosen while filming <em>Dirt, <\/em>Newfoundland, standing next to the featured chef, Jeremy Charles <\/span> (Photo: Wade Dunstan)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Dirt<\/em>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/huckberry.com\/dirt-newfoundland\">Newfoundland<\/a> is the last episode to drop, and Rosen\u2019s favorite so far. It\u2019s a fun one, because unlike the other destinations, he had no idea what to expect this time around. \u201cI found that it\u2019s a place of extreme isolation,\u201d Rosen says. \u201cThere\u2019s no way to fly there direct. It was 20 hours to get there, even though it\u2019s just on the other side of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"width:100%;border:none;display:block\" title=\"Script Content\" async=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNewfoundland slows people down,\u201d Rosen says. People have migrated there from places like Europe and built a world around fishing. \u201cThere\u2019s no tourism industry. It\u2019s like you understand when you\u2019re born there that you\u2019re going to be a fisherman or you\u2019re going to be a beekeeper,\u201d Rosen says. \u201cIt\u2019s the most culturally interesting place I\u2019ve ever been, and it\u2019s in Canada\u2014just this little rock floating in the ocean existing in this beautiful way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the people really opened up. \u201cPeople are so excited to share their beautiful pasture of goose hunting or whatever it is, that no one has ever asked them about,\u201d Rosen says. \u201cBut when you get in it, there\u2019s just this incredibly beautiful, rich, dense history that they\u2019re sort of sharing for the first time, and you really feel like you\u2019re discovering something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for all the culinary magic he\u2019s experienced, Rosen has a favorite one of those, too.<\/p>\n<p>In Newfoundland, you have a short amount of time to gather food. \u201cThey have really long, really cold winters,\u201d Rosen says. \u201cA lot of the food that you\u2019re eating has to be reconstituted or kept in these root cellars, which is this whole amazing world, these little holes in the ground that are beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" rel=\"noopener\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=abm-nTPVSkU\">locals take codfish<\/a> that\u2019s been salted and reconstitute it and crisp it, then mix it with things like potatoes. \u201cThen it\u2019s got this beautiful buttery flavor around it. My mouth is watering now,\u201d Rosen says.<\/p>\n<p>The dish is a local staple that made its way to Newfoundland by an established trade route to the Caribbean. \u201cNewfoundlanders wanted rum and sugar and in the Caribbean, they have plenty of fish,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd the cod fish has a flavor and a texture that is unique, that you long for.\u201d Newfoundlanders travel 3,000 miles to retrieve it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout being forced, just a naturally made route,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just so romantic. Each episode inspires a different curiosity that I set free and I just follow the trail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But at the heart of the show is the power of human connection. \u201cI believe this on an almost spiritual level: that there is something bigger than the individual and that this connection is what gives life meaning,\u201d West says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that\u2019s what this inspires in others.
