Pilates was imprisoned by the British as a German national classified as an \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/features\/the-great-war-mr-pilates\/\">enemy alien<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>During his time in an internment camp, Pilates led injured inmates in rehabilitative exercises which could be done from a hospital bed, and led to the now-widespread practice.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image Credit: New York Pilates<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-pilates-became-mainstream-and-a-business-in-the-u-s-nbsp\">How Pilates became mainstream \u2014 and a business \u2014 in the U.S.\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Pilates\u2019 journey in the U.S. kicked off when its founder brought the practice to Manhattan in 1926. Heather Andersen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Andersen and Isaacs opened their first New York Pilates studio in 2013. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, \u200aif you were wanting to participate in Pilates, you had to go and book a private session, which has all sorts of hurdles \u2014 \u200afinding an instructor, scheduling, it\u2019s expensive,\u201d Andersen tells <em>Entrepreneur<\/em>. \u201cI thought \u200athat you should be able to go take a reformer class in the way that you could go take a yoga class in New York City at any time of day or night.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The reformer apparatus, a bed-like frame with a sliding carriage, was also created by Pilates, and features springs and ropes for resistance to aid in the signature full-body, low-impact workout.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-business-of-pilates-and-its-spinoffs-and-what-keeps-people-coming-back\">The business of pilates and its spinoffs \u2014 and what keeps people coming back<\/h2>\n<p>New York Pilates is a contemporary studio focused on proper technique, form and functional alignment, Andersen says. When Andersen opened the first studio, she still considered reformer Pilates a somewhat niche activity, and says it was a \u201creally wild experience\u201d to see it rise in popularity as quickly as it did.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New York Pilates currently has eight studios across New York City and the Hamptons, with plans for two more locations underway.<\/p>\n<p>Kat Anta, who started taking Pilates when she was 15 years old as a dancer with lower back pain, then fell in love with the practice and followed it into a career, has taught at New York Pilates for several years, and is also the education manager.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u200aIt\u2019s a very broad [client] demographic, especially here at the Flatiron location, and I really enjoy that,\u201d Anta says. \u201cI get a chance to work with lots of different people with different bodies, whether they\u2019re super athletic or maybe dealing with an injury. People have to process and learn information. In this kind of business, the product is real people showing up with real skills. You can\u2019t fake it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andersen also echoes Anta\u2019s sentiment \u2014 that the people are the best part of her work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis \u200acommunity is absolutely what makes it worth it,\u201d Andersen says. \u201cRunning a business is hard work, and there are a lot of challenges.
