Taylor Swift is facing a lawsuit over her last album, The Life of a Showgirl<\/em>\u2014from a fellow showgirl.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n In the complaint, filed on Monday, Las Vegas-based performer Maren Wade claims that Swift\u2019s hit album bears striking similarities to her own creative work. For years, Wade has written a column in the Las Vegas Weekly<\/em> newspaper called \u201cConfessions of a Showgirl,\u201d which she expanded into a touring live show with the same name.\u00a0<\/p>\n On her website<\/a>, Wade\u2019s show is described as a \u201cone-woman comedic cabaret [featuring] the quirky and hilarious world of a modern-day Vegas showgirl.\u201d Wade also performed on NBC\u2019s America\u2019s Got Talent<\/em> in 2014, the same year her column began running in the alternative weekly newspaper. Wade registered her \u201cConfessions of a Showgirl\u201d brand with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2015.<\/p>\n \u201cOver the course of a decade, CONFESSIONS OF A SHOWGIRL grew into a brand encompassing performances, writing, and digital media\u2014built by one person, city by city, and show by show,\u201d Wade says in the complaint<\/a>, which points to the thematic and aesthetic similarities between Swift\u2019s album title and her own show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cBoth share the same structure, the same dominant phrase, and the same overall commercial impression,\u201d the complaint states. Wade argues that after years of toiling to build her own showgirl-themed brand, Swift\u2019s album launch immediately overwhelmed her long-established trademark, drowning it out and giving consumers the impression that \u201cthe original is the imitation.\u201d \u201cWhat Plaintiff had built over twelve years, Defendants threatened to swallow in weeks,\u201d the complaint states.<\/p>\n Fast Company<\/em> reached out to Swift\u2019s publicity team for comment on the new lawsuit but has not yet received a response.<\/p>\n In the complaint, Wade claims that the United States Patent and Trademark Office rejected Swift\u2019s attempt to register The Life of a Showgirl<\/em> based on the risk of confusing it with Wade\u2019s already-registered Confessions of a Showgirl<\/em> trademark.
