Another iPhone update has been released just two weeks after the last one. But unlike iOS 26.4.1, the new version is all about one security fix. Here’s all you need to know and whether you should update to it or not.

This post has the initial thoughts on the new release and I’ll be updating this post over the coming week and I’ll add final thoughts on Thursday, April 30.

Who Is It For And How Do You Get It?

This is just the same as other iOS 26 updates, that is, it’s for all phones from the iPhone 11 and more recent. The latest models, including the iPhone 17 series, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air, are all covered by iOS 26.4.1. It’s also been released for those users who haven’t updated to iOS 26 in the form of iOS 18.7.8.

It’s simple to install: go to the Settings app on the iPhone, choose General, then Software Update. Next, select Download and Install, and the software will download from there. This download was reasonably small, around 770MB on my iPhone 17 Pro Max.

    What It’s About

There’s just one element here, and it’s about fixing an issue where notifications that you previously deleted remained on-device. It’s a security fix, in other words.

    Apple iOS 26.4.2 Security

The background to the issue is that recently the FBI accessed message notification content from Signal even after the app had been deleted.

Let’s be clear, this is a serious issue, though it’s also true that for almost all of us, this would never have been a problem unless we’d fallen foul of the FBI. Dear reader, please don’t.

    But it’s now been fixed.

    Initial Reactions

First reactions have been positive, with gleeful descriptions of an update seen to be defiant to the FBI (it’s more about making the phone work as it should, I’d say) though some users were advising anyone on iOS 18 to stay there.

There were comments about the screen stuttering when scrolling, but these encompassed some saying it was better, some that it was worse. But no new issues have been introduced, it seems.

Apple iOS 26.4.2 Initial Verdict: Update

This is a one-purpose update and since nobody wants to find that something they had deleted was still accessible on the phone, it’s a fix worth having.
