    5 Signals That Influence Claude and ChatGPT Recommendations

    The past two decades have seen search engines and social media as the twin engines of online visibility, and the rules — while always shifting — remained at least broadly the same.

    That playbook isn’t obsolete, but it’s no longer complete. Generative AI has introduced a third channel that some analysts believe will eventually eclipse traditional search altogether. When a potential customer asks ChatGPT or Claude to recommend a product or service and your brand doesn’t come up, no amount of first-page Google rankings will save that deal.

    I’ve spent the past year studying how AI recommendation engines decide which businesses to name — and which to ignore. What I’ve found challenges a lot of assumptions. Here are the five signals that matter most right now, and what you can do about each one.

    1. Third-party corroboration is the new domain authority

    In traditional SEO, your own website is the center of gravity. In generative AI, it’s more like the starting line. The brands that get recommended most consistently aren’t necessarily the ones with the strongest on-site content — they’re the ones that show up across multiple independent sources saying roughly the same thing.

    Think of it from the model’s perspective. If ten different “best of” lists, three niche publications and a handful of analyst reports all describe your product in similar terms, that’s a signal the model can act on with confidence. If the only place making that claim is your homepage, the model hedges — or skips you entirely.

    Similarweb’s research backs this up: Specialist brands with strong contextual mention coverage regularly outperform larger competitors in AI visibility. The practical takeaway for marketers is to shift effort from creating more on-site content toward earning more third-party inclusions — comparison articles, industry roundups and analyst mentions where your ideal buyers are already doing research.

    2. Context-matched placement beats raw mention volume

    Not all third-party coverage is created equal. I’ve seen brands with extensive global press coverage that still get passed over by ChatGPT because none of that coverage matches the specific context buyers are searching in.

    A client of ours experienced this firsthand. They dominated Google rankings for their core keywords but were invisible across AI tools. The gap wasn’t volume — they had plenty of media mentions. It was relevance. Their coverage was geographically and contextually misaligned with how buyers were framing their questions. 

    Once we focused on earning placements in context-specific lists that matched actual buyer decision-making paths, the brand started appearing as a top recommendation across ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude within weeks.

    The distinction here is important: Generic coverage tells the model your brand exists. Contextual coverage tells it that your brand belongs in a specific decision set. Most recommendation prompts are decision prompts, not discovery prompts — and your placement strategy should reflect that.

    3. Distributed review signals function as proof, not just social proof

    Marketers have always valued reviews for conversion. In the AI recommendation era, reviews serve a different and arguably more important function: They act as independent verification that the model can cross-reference against your own claims.

    When a brand’s stated positioning — say, “best for enterprise teams” — is echoed across G2, Reddit threads, Capterra reviews and industry forums, the model treats that as corroborated evidence. When the only place making that claim is the brand’s own website, it’s just an assertion. The difference shows up in whether the model recommends you with conviction or buries you in a generic list.

    The implication for marketing teams is to stop treating review generation as a post-sale afterthought. It’s now a core input into your AI visibility. Encourage customers to describe their experience in language that aligns with how you position yourself — not through scripts, but by delivering an experience that naturally produces the feedback you want attributed to your brand.

    4. Your trust proof needs to be machine-readable

    Here’s something that surprises a lot of marketers: Even brands with strong credibility can underperform in AI recommendations if their proof isn’t easy for models to extract and use.

    I’ve audited dozens of sites where impressive case studies, client logos and performance metrics were locked inside JavaScript accordions, buried in PDF downloads or displayed as image-only badges with no accompanying text. Models can’t reliably parse any of that. 

    As Search Engine Land’s analysis of generative trust signals puts it, accuracy, authority and transparency need to be consistently present in crawlable, structured content — not hidden behind interaction layers.

    The fix is straightforward. Put your strongest proof in plain HTML body text. Pair every major claim with a specific, named reference. Use clear section headings that include the entities and outcomes you want to be known for. If a model can’t find and quote your evidence in a single crawl pass, that evidence functionally doesn’t exist.

    5. Specificity wins over superlatives

    “Industry-leading platform” means nothing to a language model. Neither does “world-class service” or “trusted by thousands.” These phrases are functionally invisible because they can’t be verified, compared or corroborated.

    What works instead is specificity. Research by Kevin Indig found that the pages most frequently cited by AI platforms tend to have less raw traffic and fewer backlinks than top Google results — but they contain concrete, verifiable information that models can confidently reuse. Saying “used by 4,200 SaaS companies, including three of the five largest U.S. banks” gives the model something it can cross-reference and repeat. Saying “trusted by leading enterprises” gives it nothing.

    Go through your key landing pages and replace every vague authority claim with a measurable, attributable fact. Name customer segments. Quantify outcomes. Reference specific methodologies. The language on your own site should mirror the language that independent sources use to describe you — because that alignment is exactly what recommendation engines are looking for.

    What comes next

    The shift from search-driven to recommendation-driven discovery isn’t a future scenario — it’s happening now, and it rewards a different kind of marketing discipline. The brands winning in AI visibility aren’t gaming a new algorithm. They’re doing the hard, legitimate work of building verifiable credibility across multiple surfaces.

    Start by auditing where your brand shows up outside your own website. Identify the gaps between how you describe yourself and how independent sources describe you. Then close those gaps — not with more content, but with more proof in the places that matter.
