As one of the fastest growing cities in the country, Charlotte already enjoys considerable buzz about its friendly charm and vibrant neighborhoods. Now it’s getting well-deserved love for its outdoor scene as well, with tranquil lakes, sinuous singletrack, and even whitewater rapids all within easy reach. Combine that with the Queen City’s signature take on Southern culture, plus four seasons of ideal weather, and you have the perfect year-round outdoor destination. Here’s what to expect.

Mild temperatures and abundant sunshine join forces for an atmosphere that’s perfect for adventure and relaxation.

    Find the Wildest Water Around

Charlotte’s Whitewater Center features the largest manmade whitewater river in the world, with a recirculating design that delivers boaters into a series of class II-IV rapids in a concentrated area. Hop in a boat with an experienced guide and enjoy a whitewater adventure that’s tailored to your skill level, whether you’re looking for a family-friendly class II-III journey or a wild class IV+ romp through big water. Raft and repeat.

    Enjoy Life in Bloom

Spring brings (very colorful) life to the Daniel Stowe Conservancy, where you can explore 90 acres of cultivated gardens through a series of walking trails and interactive exhibits. The Conservancy is famous for its collection of more than 5,000 orchids, with a wide array of varieties on display, from miniature buds to the most rare flowers.

Enjoy a Taste of the Mediterranean

Located in Charlotte’s South End neighborhood, right off the Rail Trail, Chapter 6 serves a delicious array of western Mediterranean dishes. Recommendation: Order The Treatment and turn the meal over to the servers and kitchen, and enjoy a tasting tour of recipes both on and off the menu. Not only is The Treatment fun and social, it’s also a fundraiser; Chapter 6 donates $5 per guest to charity.

Embrace the long days and warm evenings with iconic water adventures and breezy rooftop concoctions.

Take a Dip in a Swimming Hole

Tucked into a forest just 30 minutes north of the city, the Quarry at Carrigan Farms offers one of the most scenic plunge pools in the South, where a natural, spring-fed pond sits at the base of a historic quarry’s granite walls. There are platforms to jump from, rope swings to launch from, and a sandy beach if you just want to take some mellow laps around the aqua-blue pool.

    Surf at Lake Norman

You can choose your own lake adventure near Charlotte, even surfing. Head out for a wake surfing lesson with Ride Wake and Surf Co. on massive Lake Norman, and you’ll be ripping the waves in no time. If that’s too much horsepower, rent a paddleboard from Mountain Island Lake Paddle Company and explore the quiet coves of Mountain Island Lake, an adjacent body of water that sees less boat traffic.

Wind Down on a Rooftop Bar

Watch the sun go down and the night come to life from the elevated perch of Buho Bar, a rooftop hangout in Uptown Charlotte that takes its inspiration from South America’s culinary scene. Order the herb-roasted lamb chops and street corn fries and try a creative cocktail like the Oaxacan Mystery.

The leaves are changing and the air is getting crisp. Pack a flannel and a sense of adventure.

    Cruise the Colorful Canopy

Charlotte is surrounded by hardwood forest, which turns into a kaleidoscope of color come fall. Enjoy Mother Nature’s seasonal performance to its fullest on a mountain bike: The Whitewater Center boasts 40 miles of singletrack that traverse the forest adjacent to its manmade river. Want to get up close and personal with the canopy? Try ziplining the Whitewater Center’s aerial course, which features six ziplines, the tallest of which starts 100 feet off the ground.

    Run 26.2 Through the City

The best way to explore Charlotte is on foot. Walk it anytime, or make a race of it with the annual Charlotte Marathon, the city’s premier running event. The scenic course meanders through Charlotte’s dynamic and diverse neighborhoods, with spectators and live bands lining the streets. There are half-marathon and 5K options, too.

    Forage for Fruit

Just beyond city limits, the rural hills are packed with fruit orchards, many of which serve up ripe apples in autumn. Picking fresh, delicious apples at Windy Hill Orchard is a tradition for many visitors and families, who come for the Southern heirloom varieties like the tart Stamen Winesap as well as the crowd-favorite Pink Lady. Come hungry, as the farm also makes the best cider donuts in the region.

From ice skating to igloo happy hour, Charlotte brings just the right touch of winter to its mild Southern weather.

    Lace Up Your Skates

Camp North End is a 76-acre former industrial site that’s been redeveloped into a live-work-play hub of creativity and innovation. Picture lofts, record shops, wine bars, and professional offices all mingling on the same campus. In the winter, that campus comes alive with ice skating on an outdoor rink lined with fire pits, warming huts, and plenty of hot food and beverages.

    Explore Charlotte’s Winter Wonderland

Every winter, the Whitewater Center shifts gears to offer visitors a chance to enjoy the season to the fullest. The Center offers an illuminated trail through the woods for night treks, a Christmas tree lot, a pop-up market, and even pond hockey on the 24,000-square-foot ice rink.

    Warm Up in an Igloo

An igloo in the South? Believe it. Merchant & Trade, a popular rooftop restaurant and bar that sits on the 19th floor of the Kimpton Tryon Park Hotel, brings out two large igloos each winter so guests can continue to enjoy the city’s skyline views when the mercury drops. Try the Copperhead, a cocktail with two kinds of whiskey, for the perfect winter warmer.

The Queen City has no shortage of fresh-air pursuits for your next getaway. Raise a glass at one of Charlotte’s buzzing rooftop bars and outdoor patios, discover the city’s thriving culinary scene, and experience unforgettable adventures under the sun.
