007 First Light

While everyone is talking about Grand Theft Auto 6 and Forza Horizon 6, and rightfully so, 007 First Light is nearing release and it may be flying under the radar. We’re 12 days from launch and there’s at least 10 things you should know before the game releases.
1. When Does 007 First Light Release And On What Platforms?
May 27, 2026 is the date and this one has everyone covered at launch, with the exception of the Nintendo Switch 2. PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC players will all get the game day one across Steam, Epic, Xbox/PC and ROG Ally / Ally X.
The Switch 2 version is scheduled for later in summer 2026 with no fixed day yet announced. IO Interactive has also confirmed the game has officially gone gold, which means the May 27 date is locked.
2. Why Was 007 First Light Delayed From March To May?
The delay was scary, though it was likely a decision built on the strength of avoiding the original GTA 6 launch date. IO Interactive announced the two-month push in December 2025, moving the game from March 27 to May 27 and citing additional polish time.
Going head-to-head with Grand Theft Auto 6 — even before Rockstar’s own delay shifted GTA 6 to November — would have been a brutal calendar collision. The May 27 move buys IO breathing room and a less crowded release window.
3. Who Plays James Bond In 007 First Light?
If you watched Dexter: Original Sin, you’re familiar with Patrick Gibson. For some, First Light will be their first look at the talented young Bond.
The supporting cast is just as fresh — Lennie James as mentor Greenway, Priyanga Burford as M, Alastair Mackenzie as Q and Kiera Lester as Moneypenny. None of the character interpretations are tied to any prior film actor’s portrayal.
4. Is 007 First Light An Origin Story Or A Movie Tie-In?
Gibson, at least the virtual version, is getting his own Bond alternate universe — so to speak. IO Interactive built 007 First Light as a fully original continuity, not a tie-in to any existing James Bond film.
The story follows a 26-year-old Bond at the start of his career, before he’s earned 00 status. Franchise art director Rasmus Poulsen has described it as a Bond who has experienced personal tragedy but hasn’t yet been hardened by the darker side of spycraft.
5. How Does 007 First Light Play — Stealth Or Action?
First Light gives you a mixture of styles, which I like. From the looks of it, it feels like it plays like a faster-pace version of the iconic Splinter Cell franchise.
IO Interactive has positioned the game between Hitman-style stealth and full cinematic action, with missions supporting multiple approaches. Players can lean into quiet infiltration with gadgets and disguises, or push for direct firefights and rooftop chase sequences when the situation calls for it.
6. What Gadgets Are In 007 First Light?
The gadget box gamifies this release and pays homage to the Bond character’s ingenuity. The centerpiece is a multifunction Q-watch that acts as the gadget hub, packing a laser strap that dazes enemies, a dart-firing phone with poison projectiles, modified earbuds that create blinding flashes and smoke bombs for escapes.
GamingBolt called the gadget sandbox a key element of the fantasy, designed to let you play trickster spy rather than just a third-person shooter. Diversions and traps are also triggered through the watch, opening up creative routes through missions.
7. Who Is Bawma And Why Is Lenny Kravitz Involved?
What’s a Bond vehicle without a memorable and charismatic villain? Legendary rocker Lenny Kravitz was a great casting decision in this instance.
Kravitz voices Bawma, a Pirate King-type antagonist built specifically for this game rather than pulled from the existing Bond film catalog. The casting brings real star wattage to a brand-new villain — exactly the kind of swing IO Interactive needs to make this fresh continuity feel like its own thing.
8. Who Wrote The 007 First Light Title Song?
Theme songs are big in the Bond world and this one is no different. The title track “First Light” was written and composed by Lana Del Rey and David Arnold, with Del Rey handling the vocals.
Arnold previously scored five James Bond films, including Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, which makes his return to the franchise especially significant. The in-game score is composed separately by The Flight, but the Del Rey title track is the headline grab.
9. Is 007 First Light Replayable?
It appears IO Interactive made an effort to deliver replay value to their fans. Missions and chapters can be replayed individually, and there’s a dedicated tactical mode with alternative objectives and challenge variants.
That structure means the same mission you cleared on stealth can be re-run with a louder approach the next time through. Different routes through each level — stealth, social infiltration or full-action — feed the replay loop in a way that should give the game serious legs past launch week.
10. Should You Pre-Order 007 First Light?
If you’re looking for an action-packed, stealthy title to dive into in the late spring and early summer, this feels like a good choice. The pre-order math is straightforward — lock in before May 27 and you get the Deluxe Edition (cosmetic packs, extra outfits, weapon skins and 24-hour early access for digital) at the standard $69.99 price.
With the game already gone gold, the delay risk that usually makes pre-orders a gamble is off the table. For a deeper breakdown of every edition and pre-order bonus, I covered the full editions lineup earlier this spring. If you want to see how 007 First Light stacks up against the other big spring release, Forza Horizon 6’s early access is already live.
