Content creators and influencers have a new Meta app to consider in 2026: Instants. This real-time photo-sharing platform, accessible both within Instagram and as a standalone app, is designed for sharing unedited photos that disappear after 24 hours or after being viewed. Here’s what you need to know about Instagram’s Instants and what it means for creators and influencers.
What Is Instagram’s Instants?
Instagram Instants is a new way to share photos with your followers or your close friends. You can share in-the-moment experiences with your audiences directly on the app.
You can find Instants both within Instagram and as a standalone app. As of May 2026, Instants is the No.1 Social app in the app store.
Photos shared on Instants cannot be edited. Photos also disappear from Instants after they’ve been viewed. There is also a 24-hour expiration timeline on photos.
How Does Instagrams’s Instants App Work?
Step 1: You can access Instants in your Instagram inbox by tapping on the pile of photos at the bottom right corner.
Step 2: Next, users can instantly snap a photo of what they’re doing and upload it with a caption. Instants does not allow users to upload photos from their phone’s photo galleries.
Step 3: Choose who you want to share your photo or your “instant” with. Users can choose their “Close Friends” or “Followers”. And either your close friends or followers can reply with emojis or send Instants back.
A Few More Quick Facts About Instants:
- Friends and followers cannot screenshot or record the Instants you share.
- There is an Undo feature. If you accidentally send an instant, you can take it back by quickly tapping the undo button.
- There is a Snooze feature as well. You can hold down the pile of Instants in your Instagram inbox and swipe right. The Snooze feature will temporarily stop you from receiving Instants.
What Does The Launch Of Instants Mean For Meta And Their Greater Ecosystem Of Apps?
Creators and influencers continue to have more options from Meta for creating content and interacting with their communities. With the launch of Threads, creators had another option to share their thoughts and experiences and to engage with their community outside of X. Edits came in as a short-form video creation and editing app to compete with TikTok’s CapCut and also provide creators with more insights about their Instagram reels.
Now Instants poses as another Meta alternative app from Snapchat and BeReal. Being integrated into Instagram is a clear sign for creators and users to experiment and engage with the new standalone app.
Meta’s strategic launches of Threads, Edits, and Instants over the last few years signal its continued efforts to capture consumers’ attention across touch points. These Meta apps either compete or replace existing social media and editing apps.
