Unlucky for some: 13 models of Kindle will no longer access the Kindle Store to buy or download books. This change, announced by Amazon in April 2026, has now come into effect. Here’s the full list of affected models and what it means for readers.

This is not the first time Amazon has deleted earlier models, but it’s important to note that if you have an affected Kindle, it doesn’t mean that the books on it are going to vanish (so that copy of James Joyce’s Ulysses that you bought years ago and have finally decided you must read is still there waiting for you, dauntingly).

Everything that’s on the device remains there, and the Kindle will keep working tomorrow exactly as it does today.

What Changes Following The Store Cancellation

But it means that the ebook reader will no longer connect to the Kindle Store, so you can’t buy any more books for it. Nor can you borrow or download new content for it.

    Which Kindles Are Affected?

This is the full list of Kindles no longer receiving support from Amazon: Kindle (released in 2007), Kindle 2 (2009), Kindle DX (2009), Kindle DX Graphite (2010), Kindle Keyboard/Kindle 3 (2010), Kindle 4 (2011), Kindle Touch (2011), Kindle Fire (2011), Kindle 5 (2012), Kindle Paperwhite (2012), Kindle Fire 2 (2012), Kindle Fire HD 7 (2012) and Kindle Fire HD 8.9 (2012).

If some of these models give you a warm, cozy, nostalgic feel, I don’t blame you. But Amazon points out, these models are long in the tooth.

“”These models have been supported for at least 14 years — some as long as 18 years — but technology has come a long way in that time, and these devices will no longer be supported moving forward. We are notifying those still actively using them and offering promotions to help with the transition to newer devices,” Amazon said in a statement to ZDnet.

To be fair, technology really has changed a lot in that time: just check out how few screen refresh flashes there are now compared to the Kindle DX, for instance.

A new Kindle is night-and-day different from any of the ones on this list, even the first Paperwhite.
