If it seems like everyone is a trail runner now, it’s because it’s true. The once-niche sport has boomed in recent years, with runners everywhere discovering the joy of trails. The uptake has also been helped along by high-quality gear tuned to the specific needs of trail runners. Give the gift of speed and comfort with these eight picks from REI, and watch how fast your loved ones make the transition from unwrapping to lacing up.
REI Co-op Swiftland Thermal Running Hoodie
If your favorite trail runner has been eyeing midlayers but is wary of their bulk and lack of breathability, here’s the solution. The REO Co-op Swiftland Thermal Running Hoodie provides the touch of comfort and warmth needed on chilly runs, but the grid fleece is light and airy enough for pushing hard, and the sleek cut means it stashes easily when it comes off. Raglan sleeves and underarm gussets enhance comfort at any speed, and its low-profile hood and cuff thumbholes provide all the coverage a cold-weather runner needs.
Salomon Adv Skin 5 Set Hydration Vest
If logging long miles in the mountains is the perfect day, this hydration vest is like the perfect support crew. The Adv Skin 5 weighs a mere 7.2 ounces and has a body-hugging fit that echoes every move, but it also has storage options galore. Two included 500-milliliter soft flasks fit neatly into dedicated harness pockets, and the front of the vest also has plenty of room for snacks, gloves, keys, and more. More pockets on the back round out the layout, and the vest comes in multiple colors and sizes.
Nathan SpeedDraw 2.0 Insulated Flask
For unencumbered runs when all you need is a handheld flask, the SpeedDraw does the trick. Nathan designed it with double-walled construction, which keeps liquid blessedly cool when conditions are hot and sweaty. Comfortable, nonslip materials let the strap disappear in your hand, and there’s even a good amount of storage: a power mesh pocket can hold a phone, while a small zippered compartment stashes valuables.
Garmin Venu 4
Think of this smartwatch as a (very) high-end stocking stuffer. The Venu 4 is one of the top models available to data-tracking trail runners. The colorful AMOLED display shows stats and information clearly, and the Venu takes full advantage of Garmin’s impressive ecosystem for biometric monitoring and fitness training. A pulse oximeter, VO2 max calculator, and the ability to call, text, and pay with this watch are all welcome bonuses.
Patagonia Houdini Jacket
Ultralight and weather-resistant, the Houdini is not just a trail runner’s friend, it could be a life saver, and anyone on your list will be thrilled when it magically appears in their gift haul. It weighs less than four ounces but cuts the wind like a champ, and its DWR-treated fabric fends off brief bouts of precipitation as well. The jacket also packs away into its chest pocket, compressing small enough to hold in your hand. Now that’s a neat trick.
GU Energy Gel
Easy calories make for easier miles, and there’s no better way to get instant calories than GU. With more flavors than you’ll find in a holiday cookie spread—including pumpkin spice, espresso, and salted caramel—these packets are essential for maintaining energy over long distances. Everybody loves a functional stocking stuffer, and this is the best kind: tastes great, works great.
HOKA Speedgoat 7 Trail-Running Shoes
You can’t go wrong giving a trail runner traction, cushion, and comfort. That’s what this shoe is known for, and the Speedgoat 7, its newest iteration, builds on this legendary performance. That means you still get all the features that make the Speedgoat so loved: Vibram Megagrip outsoles hold fast to rocks, dirt, and roots; supercritical foam EVA midsoles produce powerful, poppy strides; and the textile uppers breathe well and are comfy for miles. And you also get welcome 2026 updates: redesigned heel collars, for improved comfort, and gaiter loops for enhanced protection. In other words: guaranteed hit.
Birkenstock Boston Clogs
The second-best thing about a long trail run? Enjoying the downtime that follows. Give the gift of unmatched recovery with this super-comfortable clog. The backless design means easy on and off—key after a day spent crushing miles—while the soft leather upper and suede footbed lining swaddle tired feet. Add in the fashion boost, and this is the platonic ideal of a post-run shoe.
