Let this sink in: More than 92 percent of Québec is public land. Come winter, those millions of acres of woods, trails, and open glades get absolutely buried in snow, turning the province into a sprawling winter playground where opportunities for ski touring, Nordic skiing, and multiday snowshoeing abound.
All that wild landscape would be nothing without a trail system to match—which is why it’s a darn good thing that groomed trails and skintracks cover the province, courtesy of Québec’s adventure-minded culture and infrastructure. Cozy rustic huts dot the high country, Nordic centers pepper the lowlands, and there’s an extensive network of designated ski-touring areas across the region.
Behind Québec’s extensive network of winter trails and refuges lies a long tradition of winter travel and exploration.
Long before winter travel became a recreational pursuit, Indigenous peoples used snowshoes and knowledge passed down through generations to navigate the territory now known as Québec. Today, these snow-covered landscapes offer countless opportunities for exploration, from Nordic skiing and multi-day snowshoeing to backcountry adventures.
Today, Québec boasts 28 national parks and dozens of Nordic and cross-country centers. It also boasts plenty of grassroots backcountry ski areas, each complete with trail maps and designated runs. There’s no avalanche mitigation at these sites—they’re wild at heart—but the effortless parking, signage, and basic infrastructure make them a perfect stepping stone between sidecountry and true backcountry. Always remember to come equipped with the appropriate training, equipment, and avalanche awareness. And if you’d rather explore with a qualified guide, you can find businesses certified through Aventure Écotourisme Québec’s Quality-Safety certification program, which sets recognized standards for risk management, guide training and service quality.
Looking to do a little bit of everything? Try Vallée Bras-du-Nord. This all-season adventure center maintains both groomed cross-country ski trails and designated backcountry terrain. Its varied slopes and jaw-dropping views guarantee an unforgettable outing, while a collection of yurts and cabins make it a true ski-in, ski-out getaway. You won’t find a backcountry experience like it anywhere else in North America.
For a more homegrown vibe, head to Sommets du Fjord, a blues-and-blacks zone just beyond the charming village of Petite-Saguenay. The town sits right on the edge of the legendary Saguenay Fjord National Park—yet another ski touring and snowshoeing epicenter—which makes it an ideal multisport base camp.
Want to turn a great day into a great week? Treat yourself to a fully immersive multiday traverse through Québec’s snow-draped winter landscapes. Robust hut systems in national parks like Mont-Tremblant and Monts-Valins make it easy to plan linkups via Nordic ski or snowshoe, and village-to-village trips in the Laurentians like those along Les Routes Blanches offer chances to discover culture and cuisine alongside the stunning landscapes. Simply choose a trail to one or more of the parks’ remote refuges and use them as stopover points to cook, relax, and connect with your adventure buddies—and recharge by a blazing woodstove before hitting the trail again the next day.
The adventure doesn’t end when the skis or snowshoes come off. Beyond the trails, Québec’s welcoming villages, local flavors, and cozy inns offer the perfect setting to unwind and reconnect. Share a well-earned meal, raise a glass of a local wine or brew with your fellow adventurers, and relive the day’s discoveries. Because sometimes, going further isn’t just about the distance you travel, it’s about everything you experience along the way.
