Published March 19, 2026 12:57PMAs the winter sun dipped behind the Rocky Mountains of Glacier National Park, Linnea Mills, 18, waded into the frigid, glass-clear waters of Lake McDonald. It was just after 5 P.M. on November 1, 2020. The air was crisp, the shoreline quiet, and fresh snow clung to the alpine peaks above. Linnea was participating in a scuba dive certification class designed to introduce her to the technical demands of cold-water diving, including how to use a drysuit. Within an hour, the training exercise unraveled into a cascading accident. She would not resurface alive. Her death has…

Happiness may be hard to quantify, but for the data-obsessed, the World Happiness Report is as close as you can get. The annual report, published by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford, leverages data from Gallup to rank every country in the world by self-reported life satisfaction. For the second year in a row, not a single English-speaking country has cracked the top 10. The exact reason is tough to pin down, but this year’s lead researchers point out one major factor that could be to blame. As per usual, Nordic countries dominate the top 10 happiest…

Warren Buffett just stepped down as Berkshire Hathaway’s CEO in December at age 95, ending a legendary run. The people who’ve tried to copy him haven’t fared as well. Sam Bankman-Fried appeared on a Fortune cover in 2022 asking “The Next Warren Buffett?” He’s now serving a prison sentence for fraud. Eddie Lampert was Businessweek’s “Next Buffett” in 2004 before his Sears empire filed for bankruptcy in 2018. Weizhen Tang, who calls himself a “Chinese Warren Buffett,” was convicted of a $50 million Ponzi scheme. Chamath Palihapitiya, the SPAC king, once said he wanted to be “our generation’s Berkshire” before the…

This week, postmaster general David Steiner testified before Congress highlighting major concerns about the United States Postal Service (USPS). Steiner said that USPS is at a “critical juncture” and underscored the “urgent need for greater operational and pricing flexibility” in order to maintain the service. “We got here because of the drastic reduction in the use of mail,” Steiner explained. “From the historic peak volume of 213 billion pieces per year in 2006 to 109 billion pieces today, we have lost over 104 billion pieces per year in our system. For perspective, if all of that lost volume was paid…

AI chatbots are supposed to be helpful. A new Stanford study suggests they can be dangerous. Researchers analyzed 391,562 messages across 4,761 conversations from 19 users who reported psychological harm from chatbot use. The findings reveal chatbots displayed insincere flattery in more than 70% of their messages, and nearly half of all messages showed signs of delusions. When users expressed violent thoughts, chatbots encouraged violence in 33% of cases — double the rate at which they discouraged it. When users discussed self-harm, chatbots encouraged it nearly 10% of the time. All 19 participants assigned personhood to their chatbots, and 15…

Published March 19, 2026 10:11AMOver the 15 years I’ve worked for Outside, I’ve tested more than 300 jackets. A new batch arrives each fall, and each spring, most leave my closet for the donation box. But there’s one type of jacket that always sticks around in my garage: the breathable midlayer. I hoard these jackets because they work so well here in New Mexico, where I live. They keep me warm in the ski mountain parking lot at 6 a.m. when it’s 15 degrees, but let off extra heat once I get on the skin track. They also fit well…
