As professional gear recommenders, we shy away from saying anything will work for everybody—especially when it comes to shoes. Shoes aren’t one-size-fits-all (literally and figuratively), and we’re careful to couch our hiking boot reviews with lots of specific recommendations and caveats from our pool of experienced testers.
But sometimes, a boot comes along that’s pretty great across the board. The kind of shoe you’d feel good about recommending to your 65-year-old mother-in-law who wants to walk trails in her local park, but also your Seattle-based friend who deals with the damp and cold for winter outdoors excursions. That shoe is the Arc’teryx Kopec Mid GTX Hiking Boot.
Our editors at Backpacker named the Kopec the “best hiking boot for most people” in their 2026 gear guide, thanks to its extreme comfort, durability, and support. “The Kopec felt like an extension of our bodies,” our lead tester gushed. “The canvas-like Cordura upper conformed to our foot shape, the midsole was both responsive and supportive, and the twelve-ounce (per shoe) weight lent a barely-there feel. Add it all together and the Kopec Mid GTX inspires confidence to move faster, take chances, and wander off trail.” Other pros included a firm, stable midsole; primo traction with Vibram Megagrip lugs; and a mightily durable upper that, when combined with the Gore-Tex liner, kept feet dry even during winter testing.
Normally $200, the Kopec is currently on sale at REI for $140 with plenty of availability in both men’s and women’s sizes.
Overall, the Kopec Mid GTX is a shoe our testers kept reaching for, whether for a morning dog walk, a technical day hike, or a long weekend backpack.
